Sherlock Holmes (2009)

null

Review written by Deathstalker.

Guy (Former Mr. Madonna) Ritchie directs this newest film based on the titular character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Well, I watched this movie today. I am coming down with bronchitis so I was not feeling that great and it took away quite a bit of the enjoyment I might have gotten from this film. With that said, I will as always review the film as objectively and fairly as possible.

null

Starring Robert Downey Jr. (who has had more lucky comebacks from drugs than my uncle) as the films titular protagonist and Jude Law as his ever faithful sidekick Dr. Watson, our story begins with our heroes tracking down Lord Blackwood (played by Mark Strong) and successfully stopping him from completing a human sacrifice. Blackwood is deemed guilty by Scotland Yard and sentenced to hang until he is dead, dead, dead! null Blackwood (who for all the world looks like the “Gentleman from Providence” H.P. Lovecraft) warns Holmes that he will come back from the dead and continue in his devious ways! True to his word, Blackwood breaks out of his crypt and continues his killings. From here, the game is afoot!

Having only a passing knowledge of Sherlock Holmes from a story I read in middle school, a couple mystery games I played as a kid, and recently watching the newer Hallmark movies, I can not say how true this is to the source material. However, I’d make an educated guess as to saying yes and no. The characters are revamped for modern audience. Sherlock still lives at 221B Baker St., there is a Prof. Lestrade, and several denouement monologues/montages of Holmes explaining the solution to the mysteries. Holmes dreaded antagonist Professor James Moriarty makes a cameo appearance that comfortably sets him up to be the antagonist of the sequel. The methodical mind of Holmes is fully on display here, and is as always, in top form. However some changes come in the look and relationship of the characters. Holmes is a lean, mean, fighting machine that can break you down in his mind seconds before doing so with his fists. Watson also has a make over. Instead of being a portly, stuffy, English chap, he is Jude Law. Another staple of the original stories, The Baker Street Irregulars, fail to make an appearance during the film. There are also love interests for both protagonists, something I have not seen before in a Sherlock Holmes movie.

The acting is uniformly solid, and for the most part the plot is as well. There are a couple things I thought made little sense (a scene involving smoke comes to mind), some of the action is too over the top, and there is no real sense of urgency or suspense in the plot until the last act. Be that as it may the look of the film is amazing. Guy Ritchie does a fantastic job at capturing the dark and foreboding majesty of 1800’s Europe. A lot of attention to detail went into the set designs which helps sell the viewer on the world the characters inhabit. As far as movies go, you can do a lot worse than this film, but unless you are dying to see it I’d say it’s a rental at best. That could be due to the mood I was in while watching it and almost falling asleep in the theater (something that never happens). Neither of those things can be blamed strictly on the film since the amount of sleep I got last night was equal to that of the film’s duration. You can certainly do worse as far as films go, but if you are a Holmes purist, I think you might be somewhat disappointed much like Guy Ritchie is in his elderly ex-wife’s choices in men.

THE MAN WHO COPIED STEVEN KLEIN by Navo

MISUNDERSTOOD MR. COLTON

The widely misunderstood and misinterpreted Mr. Charles Caleb Colton ( (1780–1832) is well-known for his eccentricities. An English writer held up by scholars as an example of someone often quoted, yet rarely understood. Colton’s forgotten work includes books and collections of epigrammatic aphorisms and short essays on conduct, like Lacon, or Many Things in Few Words, addressed to those who think., Lacon, Vol. II, The Conflagration of Moscow, An Ode on the Death of Lord Byron, and an unpublished poem of 600 lines called Modern Antiquity,  all of which has phenomenal popularity in Colton’s time. In the present-day Colton is one of the most quoted author since the twentieth century, and on the book Lacon, volume I, no. 183 is one of my most favorite quotes of all “Imitation is the sincerest of flattery.”
Like the Englishman, Mr. Colton I feel I am widely misunderstood and misinterpreted sometimes, and I seek refuge on books, books give me a high that no opium in the world can ever give, no critic in the world can ever sabotage, books don’t judge, it’s just there to nurture you, and to heal you, now I sound like a hippie, but being a “photographer” who shoots men with six packs or eight packs (its fun) like the rest of the fashion industry, I can’t help but feel “shallow”, especially when most of the people around you quotes “Madonna” and “Ana Wintour” like their “Jesus Christ” or “Buddha”, excuse the pun.

ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES, TOMORROW’S ANOTHER DAY

I’m working now on a novel that channels my creative energy, my life experience (though limited), my fantasies, my hopes, and my secrets, I’m working with a ghostwriter and an editor to help me polish what I wrote and just hope it pays off. I remember writing about my mother for a short story contest back in highschool, if it’s any sign at all, I bagged the first prize, and I remember the judges actually thought it was written by a senior when I was a sophomore at that time, it was the same ART WEEK, I also got the first prize for a painting competition. And now I am a photographer who is trying another chance into that route I never took back in highschool. Filipino’s are known for being over-achievers, and thats how I grew up, to always give my 100% in everything, to be the best version of me, and it is, I assure you, a bittersweet struggle, the story of my life. Another thing Filipinos are known for, “they are all  fighters”, they thrive on adversity, “Roll with the punches, tomorrow’s another day.” like in the movie Jerry Maguire. The greatest and the most literal symbol of those punches is the island nation’s great 21st century hero, he is a fighter who always roll with the punches of life, known to boxing fans and aficionados of the world as “Pac-Man” and the cover boy of the latest Time Magazine Asia Edition, the unstoppable force in the boxing world, Manny Pacquiao. One of the inspiration for the latest cover of MATE MAGAZINE that I took in L.A. and out this month as their year ender for 2009, with the actor/model Marco Dapper.

NAVO: COPYCAT OR PAYING HOMAGE

I also love the sadomasochistic film “Fight Club” (1999) based on the Chuck Palahniuk novel that starred Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden and Edward Norton as The Narrator, also the David Cronenberg car-crash fetish film “Crash” (1996) based on the J.G. Ballard novel starring James Spader as James Ballard. Fire is also an important element in the novel that I’m working on, obviously I’m in the mood of burning things, creatively I’m on my “arsonist mode”. The Steven Klein Cover of Justin Timberlake for Arena Homme Plus that never got published to respect the 9/11 attack, they published an alternate cover without the US flag icon, and noted that along with the first cover choice on the inside page with this explanation. Now the million dollar question is, am I a copycat or paying homage? Let the years where my true inspirations talk, Fight Club was released 1999, Crash was 1996 and the Steven Klein’s “Alternate” Arena Homme Plus Cover was on 2001 (a pivotal year for most of us), whether Mr. Klein have seen Brad Pitt’s Fight Club and David Cronenberg’s Crash, one thing is for sure, Mr. Klein worked with Brad Pitt several times and I’m 100% sure he has seen it. Does Film, Magazines, Books and People inspire me?, YES. Do I love Steven Klein’s work?, YES. Is there a lot of “COSMOPOLITAN Magazine educated, PEREZ HILTON wannabee bloggers” out there? YES. Did I pay homage or I ripped off a Steven Klein? You’ll be the judge of that, along with the people who judged, misunderstood, and misinterpreted the man who coined “Imitation is the sincerest of flattery.”

Madonna - New Dolce & Gabbana Ad

Italian Vanity Fair has the exclusive first look at Madonna’s spring 2010 Dolce & Gabbana campaign- inspired by Italian Neorealism cinema, shot by Steven Klein.

Gabbana spoke to Vanity Fair about the campaign for a feature story:

When asked as to whether Madonna knows how to wash dishes, Stefano Gabbana replies “Certainly … she’s a very practical woman … ” And does she actually eat spaghetti despite her most enviable figure? “Of course,” says Stefano, “and she can allow herself to with all the exercise she does!”

Got Love for Lady Gaga? I do.

I’ve had quite the love/hate relationship with Lady Gaga. Currently I’m in the love stage, and think it’ll stay this way for quite some time. When she first came out, I thought she was incredible. I loved how different she was from all the blonde bimbos in the music industry. But then…I saw her in the muppet outfit and was thoroughly irritated. I thought she was a complete idiot that was wearing stupid shit, not because she liked it, but purely to be different. It didn’t help when I saw her wear a mask to an interview, which muffled her voice making it impossible to hear her, or understand what she was saying. At that point, I thought she was completely obnoxious. I figured she should of started off being that much of a whack job, if it was genuine. I thought that she was simply pulling this shit to get people talking. But then it happened. The love. I saw her Bad Romance video, and just like that, I was converted, I was a fan. I started researching her and gained the utmost respect for her. She truly is unique and different. She’s not just putting on an act; it’s all her. Perhaps since she’s gained fame, she’s gained a larger budget to express herself artistically the way she wants. She’s very tuned into the fashion scene; I love that she wore an Academy Art student design in her Poker face video. That gave her serious street cred. This girl has done her research. Did you know that she’s called Lady Gaga, because of Queen’s song “Radio Gaga”? Apparently she’s a huge Freddie Mercury fan, which I absolutely love! Don’t even get me started on how much I love that she wore Alexander McQueen in her Bad Romance video. That deserves an entire post of its own. [Okay must interrupt this blog post for one second...my best friend from Vancouver just called me to tell me he just got out of the Lady Gaga concert, where he was seated dead center, 3rd row...I'M SO JEALOUS!!! He said her shoes were unreal...*sigh*] Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, Lady Gaga’s relevance in pop culture. She’s doing wonderful things; she’s literally our generation’s Madonna. She’s bringing fashion to the masses (ie McQueen in Bad Romance; none of my friends back home knew who McQueen was until they watched that video). And I love what she wore to meet the Queen – so totally, utterly Gaga, and so much better than the crap Miley Cyrus wore. Mmm, and lastly, her hair bows, made of real hair, perfection. I’ve been trying to replicate this with my own hair for weeks now, without any luck.

Happiness is a warm glove / Now I know your mine

Mark is pulling away in the blogging stakes but this time getting nostalgic about his vinyl… and especially Madonna…

As I pulled on my black leather gloves this morning, feeling a little more than is healthy like Patrick Bateman, I was transported back to last night and my joy at discovering my 7” copy of “get into the groove” by Madonna, now I didn’t know whether I actually owned this record, I knew I had a couple but I really wanted to hear the song and so had hopefully wandered over to the bookcase which serves as home to my singles to skim through on the off chance that I owned it. I found Madonna nestled between Madness and Magazine, not the most obvious place for the queen of pop and quickly scanned through her singles and to my joy I found it smiling out at me, a little scratched for sure, but there. No sooner was it in my hand than revolving around my turntable.

The crackles burbled expectantly before that synth burst through for a piece of slinky 80s nostalgia, the whole room was transformed and I was taken back to my bedroom when I was ten with robots on the wall, lego on the wall and a Madonna poster benevolently keeping watch, bliss.

It is a bit of a strange thing for an avowed indie kid such as myself to have a soft spot for Madonna but it started when I was a wee lad, and I stand by the fact that some of her stuff is good and the aforementioned song is in my humble her finest, the Sonic Youth cover isn’t bad either. The whole Madonna quest was started by watching Desperately seeking Susan, who was found so don’t worry.

But really, is there anything better than finding a record you don’t know you have and dancing around your living room to some 80s pop, probably yes but I am a very sad man.

Discovery of The Week: Madonna - Little Star

Do you have those albums that you bought a long time ago and never fully listened to? A couple of days ago,  I finally gave a lisen to Madonna’s Ray of Light. I know, i’m like 11 years late but whatever, at least I made it, lol.

I was listening through every track, recalling the fun times of 1998 and then near the close of the CD, I hear a song called Little Star. Oh em gee. It;s like acoustic/alternative/euro/pulsating song about remembering how special you are. A  little soppy in terms of the message but great song. listen to it, amazing song. It took me so back.

EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT: WINTER'S COMING!

In the north, winter preparation is critical for everyone.  We put up wood to keep our house warm.  Now, we need to help our honey bees keep thier house warm, too.

There are various opinions held by experienced bee keepers regarding proper winter hive preparation.  Choosing the proper method is somewhat confounding to novice bee keepers,  such as ourselves.

Most bee keepers, though not all, wrap their hives in tar paper.  This protects from wind, and has the added benefit of attracting solar heat.  In addition, some sort of insulating material under the top cover of the hive is essential.  The trick is to use a porous material, so that condensation, which develops when the warmth the bees produce comes into contact with the cool walls of the hive, is absorbed and doesn’t drip down onto the bee cluster and freeze.  A bee popcycle is undesirable on every level.

Among the materials suitable for insulation are ceiling tiles, burlap, and homosote (whatever that is).  We are leaning toward using a material popular with old timers: newspaper.

Naturally, we want the bees to have an interesting winter hiatus.  We will use the Sunday edition of  The New York Times.  It is thick, therefore, practical, with the added benefit of a full range of news.

I purused today’s paper with an eye toward what the bees might find interesting.   Perhaps it is because it is a Holiday weekend, but it didn’t seem like the best news day.

Tiger Woods ran over a fire hydrant and cracked his car into a tree.  Speculation abounds as to what really happened.   Allegedly, his wife heard the accident, raced outside, and used a golf club to break the window of the car.  She then pulled him out and called for help.  Some suspicious minds believe that she actually used the golf club, in the spirit of Lizzie Borden, to whack him a few times.  He fled, but didn’t get far.  This seems implausible, and besides, I don’t think the bees care.  Nor do I, though I wish him well.

There is  a story about a gecko that needed to go the veteranarian for an enema.  $500!

Apparently Madonna is dating a 22 year old stud muffin from Brazil.  He is a model, and recently became a DJ, too.  He has DJ’d two gigs, earning a whopping $15,000 for just one night’s work.  Several column inches were taken up musing about whether his first name, Jesus, is pronounced, “Hay-soos” or “Gee-zus”.   Whatever.  The bees would find this tedious–though they do like to dance.

Of course, there is a lot of buzz about the interlopers who crashed the White House party.  Now, incredibly, they are attempting to sell thier story for hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Yoo hoo, Weirdos:  We already know your stupid story.  Hay-soos!

Now that I think about it, maybe I’ll research what homosote is. . .

Reclama la masina sau la infidelitate?

Sexul vinde. Oriunde si oricand. De la aparitia lui. In marketing, de la promovarea lui. Mai intai a fost promovarea pilulei contraceptive. Au urmat ca pe banda rulanta revolutia nou aparutului Playboy, Marylin Monroe, Cosmopolitan, supermodelele aproape goale, Bill Clinton si Monica Lewinsky, Britney si Madonna, videoclipuri si reclame. Marketingul abunda in sex.

At least there’s one thing you can rely on“.

My Life - Inspiration

It was always my dream to be a dancer and a singer. Every year when the school gave us a form to fill in and to update our particulars, there was a column to write in our ambitions. We can put in three ambitions. The first one I wrote was dancer, then singer and last,  police.

Kampung Pinang was finished in 1986. All the house was being bulldozer down to pieces by the authority and replaced with  high rise flats, apartments and condominiums in concrete. We were being relocated to a place called Pantai Dalam, where we were given a unit of the longhouse (with only one small living and dining hall, a small kitchen and very small bathroom and toilet, and one medium size bedroom which we converted it into two small size bedrooms) built by the developer to put us in for temporary before we moved back to the new concrete flats (which we need to buy from the developer) in “Kampung Pinang” which they changed the name to Taman Sri Sentosa. Each block of the longhouses had ten units. My parents were being given one unit and my sister who was already married then also being given one unit side by side with ours. It was about around 80 to 90 blocks of longhouses there as I can remember. We had spent one and a half years living there. Some years later after we moved out, I heard that the longhouses were gone after a big fire broke out.

Not long after we moved into the longhouses, one day, our TV station was showing a concert video – Madonna Virgin Tour. I had recorded it into a video tape. Everyday I played that video wanted to learn to sing all her songs and dance like her. I was around fifteen years old when I first heard of Madonna and her songs from television programs. Somehow I found her very positive and energetic, and she gave me strong inspiration to become a good and successful performer. In fact she was my life changer. It doesn’t matter that she had a bad reputation or having “bad girl” image, she had inspired me to move on my life with hopes and dreams during the time I had encountered some difficult emotional problems while I was a teenager. In those days, conservative people would condemned us if we tried to imitate Madonna’s moves and personality. Anyway, I didn’t do anything stupid to ruin my life even though I was so depressed and angry at one stage. I was inspired by Madonna to change the condition of my unhappy teenager life experiences. She was the motivator for me to strive to be a better person.

I had choreographed my own dance moves and had entered many dance competitions even though I didn’t go through any proper training. My intention was not to win, but I enjoyed dancing and performing so much and I had a dream to be a dance champion for once in my life one day. My dream did come true later in life and unexpectedly even though it was not really a dance competition but sports aerobics competition which required much more effort, skill and intensity. That I will tell the whole story later.

If I haven’t been through those hardships and unhappiness while I was a teenager, I won’t be here today doing what I am doing. It would be a complete different life style and perception of life. It was because I had experienced deep anger, hatred, and depression about what was happening in our family, I wanted to know about life and the Truth, and why are we suffering even though we have been good and kind to others? It was a great life experience for anybody to experience painful sorrow and suffering, to understand what is suffering and why, and to find out how to transcend suffering. And this is the path towards self-transformation and self-realization.  If I always in good and easy life, being happy all the time, I think I won’t be thinking about these questions and I won’t know how other people feel when they are suffering anger, hatred, depression and in painful sorrow.

One day I came across a Buddhism Dhamma book titled “Our fate Is In Our Own Control” which talked about how we can change our destiny and control our own life. It was like Madonna, another life changer for me.

I was so tired about being sad and angry. I asked myself, why do I have to live my life in sadness and full of hatred? I have the right and the choice to be happy or unhappy. I don’t want to continue living my life in sadness and hatred. I wanted to change my life. It was so meaningless feeling sad and angry all the time.

After I read that book, Immediately I made a firm resolution that I want to come out of miseries.

The Dhamma taught me to be independent and to have self-control, to stop having evil and negative intentions, thoughts, actions and speech, to do good and have kind and positive intentions, thoughts, actions and speech. It taught me to have patience, compassion and letting go and to endure uncomfortable situations and feelings. It taught me to have gratitude and appreciation for the little good things that I have and not complain about things that don’t happen according to my wish.

When we were living in the longhouse, I decided to go to a dancing school to learn proper dance skill and work my way to be a successful dancer. I told my parents about my wish. They were very supportive. We went in search for good dancing school aound Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. I ended up in a Yoga and Aerobics Dance Academy where the principle told me that I was very talented and encouraged me to take up the aerobics dance instructor course with her. It would cost 600 Ringgit Malaysia. We were in financial difficulty but my brother would give part of his salary from that month to me for the course fee and the rest of the salary went for helping the family daily expenses. And so, I started teaching aerobics dance classes and a few yoga classes even before I finished the course. The principle recruited me as her assistant and I did many stage performances for the company as well. I had worked for her for two and a half years. And all these experiences had taught me another life lesson. The yoga classes then was not really Yoga practice but just doing some exercise with yoga poses.

I remember that since I was little, I like to dance and do a lots of stretching exercises which is the same as yoga poses but I have no idea that they were part of yoga poses. And all the Dhamma that I have learnt, I have no idea that they are the same as Yoga teachings. Not until I went to India for the Yoga Teachers Training Course in the ashram, I realized that what I have been practicing and believe in all the time was not any different from Yoga. Changing from teaching exercise and fitness classes into sharing Yoga with many people is another great story that I will tell later.

Everything was there already on the path for me, that’s all I can say for the moment. Since I was a little girl, without any intention I had have strong six sense about good and bad energy, and sensing what is happening to my family and some close friends and have predictions or visions or dreams about what is going to happen. Without any expectation I represented Malaysia for world sports aerobics championship in France and then became Malaysian champion after that, having my dream came true. Without any intention to change from teaching fitness exercise classes into giving yoga classes, and without any financial planning I made it to India twice for Yoga Courses, and how I have met my husband now in India during the Yoga course without the intention to get into a relationship and having a life partner. Without any idea to move to anywhere in the world, I am now in Langkawi.

And all these are already the past. A memory. A history. It did happened once but it doesn’t exist anymore. Whether I was angry and depressed before, whether I was  a champion before, whether I was being disappointed before, whether I have learnt how to change my life and came out of miseries, and whether I was happy and content, they all are just some stories to tell how that I ended up here and doing what I am doing now.

Ok, gata. Daqui 20 anos a gente conversa.

[Video] Lavender Diamond Covers Madonna

Becky Stark of Lavender Diamond is one of two diamonds that is touring with The Decemberists playing her role as Margaret in the concept album. Somehow on the side she has found the time to contribute a song to Through The Wilderness, an album of Madonna covers benefiting Raising Malawi.

I understand that this is for a good cause and props to them for the effort but let’s talk about the video and song that you are about to subject you self to below. “Like a Prayer” is an iconic song of the 80’s at what most would consider to be at the peak of Madonna’s career. Not only was it a great track but also drummed up quite a bit of controversy with the cross burning video. Now I enjoy a good cover song but am also a firm believer that when a cover song is presented it should add something to the original track, not necessarily making it better, just different. Taking the low production of the video out of the equation for a moment and just listening to the song you might never be able to tell the difference between the original work and the “new version”. Madonna has a little bit of a higher voice but other than that you would think that you were listening to karaoke at the local sake bar.

Now the video. Wow it’s bad and I really hope that it was done that way on purpose. The 80’s extravaganza of bad CGI and even worse “acting” on Starks’ end make for a painful 4:46. Starks seems to be trying to live out her Marry Poppins/princess fantasy all the while being bombarded by flaming worlds and psychedelic animals sings the chorus. This is truly one of the worse videos that I have ever seen, especially from someone that is supposed have some production money.

Madonna in Brazil...

The Queen of Pop was in Brazil recently for a fund raising project to help the Malawi children. She met many officials there where she was able to get 11 million dollars donation to her Malawi foundation. During a dinner she was introduced to the richest man in Brazil Ike Batista who was overwhelmed by Madonna’s beauty and her work to help the children of Malawi. He alone donated 7.5 million dollars which made the Queen cry. On the other hand the mayor of Brazil suggested that Madonna to hold a concert on New Years at Copa Cabana beach and she accepted the offer. I guess I’m booking to RIO on New Years!

20 Watts Reviews: Annie's Don't Stop

Annie brings energy and joy to her sophomore album

PREVIEW: Download Annie’s “Don’t Stop“

WE GIVE IT: 16/20 Watts

Annie is an interesting phenomenon.  In almost all respects, she’s just a standard pop star, working in the mold of early Madonna.  Yet, she’s still managed to attain indie credibility, the likes of which would normally be hard to come by.

Listening to her sophmore album, Don’t Stop, it’s easy to see why.  Annie doesn’t do anything too differently from her dance floor contemporaries like Kylie Minogue or even Britney Spears. However, she excels by cutting out most of the filler that those similar artists are wont to include in their respective efforts.

Don’t Stop is nearly all danceable, kinetic hooks, sounding like a compendium of all the best singles from the mid-80s, updated with a nod to early 2000s electronica.  Normally cheesy synthesizers and glitchy bloops and bleeps comfortably coexist on this album.  The production on Don’t Stop is frenzied, never pausing or letting the album catch its breath, and Annie’s almost mechanically precise voice floats effortlessly over it.

This isn’t to say that the album is perfect, for one, the lyrics are absolutely dreadful.  This isn’t too much of a mark against the album, however. The words are less important than the sense of motion that most of the songs inspire. But still, it doesn’t appear entirely necessary to resort to so many cliches.

Three of the songs (“Loco,” “Marie Cherie” and “What Do You Want (The Breakfast Song)”) also fall flat, leaving the listener unmoved–a fatal flaw in a dance record.  Other than that, however, Annie has created a marvel.

Don’t Stop is everything that’s good about pop. it’s not deep or important, but Don’t Stop is pretty, fun and almost criminally catchy.  The best songs on the album (“Bad Times” and “Heaven and Hell”) have a magical ability to transport the listener to a dance party, regardless of where the listener actually is.  Simply put, Don’t Stop excels in the realm of dance pop. It’s a record that breathes new life into stale pop tropes, and has fun doing it too.

Paradise (not for me) update!

Winter is upon us, so what’s better than picking up your acoustic and playing some of your fave Madonna songs? That’s what we are thinking here at ASP, so we have updated the chords sheet of one great song – “Paradise (not for me)”, the version from the Confessions Tour!

In this song, Madonna plays the main riff with her (gorgeous) black Gibson Hummingbird while Monte Pittman fills in with some solos that give the song that delicate touch! Give it a try and tell us what you think! Download it from here!

Madonna del Ghisallo - Patron Saint of Cyclists - a story

kellyegan:

Madonna del Ghisallo – Patron Saint of Cyclists.

Medieval legend says that Count Ghisallo was travelling near the village of Magréglio when he was attacked by highway bandits. Spotting a image of the Virgin Mary in a roadside shrine, he broke away from his attackers and ran to it. There he took refuge, pled for Our Lady’s protection – and was miraculously saved from the robbers.

As the story spread, the Madonna del Ghisallo became known as patroness of local travellers. In more recent times, cyclists would often stop to rest and pray at the chapel, which is a local landmark, and is at the top of a steep hill. After World War II, FatherItalian shrine for bicyclists, and she was given as patroness of cyclists on 13 October 1949 by PopePius XII.

The chapel has become equal part religious shrine, part cycling museum, with artifacts and photos from the sport. There is an eternal flame that burns there in memory of the cyclists of are no longer with us, and services each Christmas Eve and the Feast of All Souls commemorate them.

Pendent available here.

Nice story, but just how did the Virgin of Ghisallo “miraculously” save the poor traveler from bandits?

Did she ride up on her fixed-gear bicycle miraculously powered by her straddled legs and come to a stop without brakes, announcing that it was she, Mary, or as her riding club calls her: The Virgin, and that she was there to set right what has gone wrong?

Did she whip out her U-lock, brandishing it menacingly in the air? Did the bandits, unsure of how to react to the miracle they were witnessing, foolishly attempt to knock her off her bike? Did she have to beat them down with the business end of her lock, their bloodied remains scurrying away to tell tales of this “U-lock justice”?

Or maybe the leader bandit, suspiciously at ease on a fixed-gear himself (Satan?), challenged Mary to a duel of wits and bike tricks. Did Mary’s one-legged 50 yard skid so shame the bandit leader that he rode away on a recumbent?

And did the traveler, now saved by this miracle that is Mary the Virgin, bow down to her in eternal gratitude only to be swept up in her strong arms and thrown prostrate to the ground? Was the last thing he heard before he woke up in tattered clothes with a sore pelvis and a dumb smile on his face: “Stay down little man, The Virgin likes to be on top!”

Ricky

Esses dias assisti Ricky, o novo de François Ozon (Swimming Pool / 8 Mulheres). Amo.

Little Ashes – Sobre Salvador Dali com Robert Pattinson

Coco Chanel – legalzinho…

Budapeste – pretensioso.

Madonna and Ethan Hawke support Roma Rights

Back in August, Madonna was booed by fans at her concert in Romania for speaking out against discrimination against Eastern Europe’s Gypsies also known as Roma.

On Saturday, the Associated Press reports that actor Ethan Hawke, while in Romania has come to Madonna’s defense saying, “She transcended being a pop star. She drew international attention and shone the spotlight on a level of racism and the need for greater education.”ethan

Madonna’s publicist said the the star “has been touring with a phenomenal troupe of Roma musicians who made her aware of the discrimination toward them in several countries so she felt compelled to make a brief statement during the concert.”

There were a few cheers from the crowd but her words were generally not met with support. Human rights advocates say the Roma, who live predominately in Southern and Eastern Europe, probably suffer more humiliation and endure more discrimination than any other group on the continent.

A Review of the Song, “Ultimate,” by Gogol Bordello: A Musical Multi-Car Pileup with Confetti

Eugene Hütz, founder of the acclaimed gypsy rock group, Gogol Bordello, was a teenager when the Chernobyl meltdown in 1986 displaced his family in Kiev, Ukraine. Since then, Hütz seems to have converted that chaotic, atom-splitting energy into “complete orgasmal hysteria” onstage  - which is how Hütz has described the group’s live performances (NPR Interview, 2007).

(L to R: Gogol Bordello’s Yuri Lemeshev, Sergey Ryabstev and Eugene Hütz)

Here’s what a couple of my Facebook friends told me this week about seeing Gogol Bordello live:

  • Dana – I just saw them at Voodoo Fest in New Orleans and at Austin City Limits (ACL) Music Festival last year. I wanted to run away with them. Totally contagious.
  • Brian – I “lurves” me some gypsy rock. I saw them at ACL a couple years ago. Very high-energy – the crowd couldn’t help but dance.

Until recently, I had never heard of the band. I’m probably the last person who can claim that in indie listening circles, because Hütz, the group’s leader, knows how to draw attention to himself, thanks to his charisma, philosophical bent and sweaty decadence.

To date, the band has its own documentary, “Gogol Bordello Non-Stop” (Hoptza Films, 2008), has performed with pop powerhouse Madonna and has appeared at countless marquee music festivals across the globe. Hütz also played leading roles in the movies “Everything is Illuminated” (Warner Independent Pictures, 2005) and Madonna’s directorial debut, “Filth and Wisdom” (IFC Films, 2008).

New Album
On Oct. 6, 2009, Gogol Bordello released a CD/DVD set called “Live from Axis Mundi” (SideOneDummy) that includes footage from a concert in New York City as well as a BBC radio session.

The music attacks the senses. Every time I tried to settle into any particular beat or sound, Gogol Bordello pulled me by the ear to witness another jarring style or musical idea. The group smashes dub, gypsy music, punk, caberet and more into loud anthems that make me want to sing and cast my vote for something – with Gogol Bordello, that’s probably something extreme.

My favorite track is “Ultimate,” which was from a 2008 live performance on BBC- Radio 1’s “In The Company Of (with Colin Murray).” Here’s a taste of the lyrics (word order is faithful to the recording):

“An evolution is eternal
An evolution isn’t over
Everybody shows
And everybody knows
That if we are here, not to do
What you and I wanna’ do
And go forever crazy with it
Why the hell we are even here?
Daaaahhhh!!!!”

When Hütz yells at the end of each verse, it’s time to party like a car crash.

Since words really can’t describe Gogol Bordello, here are a couple videos:

  • The song, “Ultimate” from the 2008 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGuOypqaYzU

The Crisis in British Masculinity

There’s more evidence in last week’s Daily Mail of discontent amongst British women due to a crisis of masculinity in British men. Liz Jones writes “Who created this generation of feeble ‘Hotel Mum’ men? Er, I did”

Jones is scathing in her criticism of the British male:

men under 40 today are, without doubt, feeble, infantile and feckless.

They don’t have the self-confidence to ask women out except when paralytic on cheap blue vodka…

They never attempt to get out their very low-limit Electron debit cards when the bill turns up…

And they have all been raised on a diet of internet porn and ridiculous men’s magazines (in the male glossy world you are either a ponce or a pervert – there is no middle ground) so that all of them, to a wimp, are useless in bed.

No wonder all these big babies have scurried back home to their football-appliqued duvets – their girlfriends have long since chucked them out.

I’m glad I turned 41 last week!

The blame, says Liz Jones, lies at the feet of British women:

The real culprits are women just like me. Bossy, over-achieving, high-maintenance madams who mistook the notion of being equal to men for a scenario in which we completely took over, infantilised them, cosseted them and ultimately castrated them.

The shift in the power-dynamic between men and women has resulted in men giving up:

I’m afraid the result is that we’ve turned our husbands and boyfriends (and now, I’m perfectly sure, our sons) into perpetual Little Lord Fauntleroys – spoilt, spurious sperm donors still wet behind the ears.

But, is this really the fault of our women? The suffragettes clearly set a precedent which was taken from the workplace into the home by the eighties material girls and nineties girl power brigade. But women should not be too quick to blame themselves. Men have a responsibility to live as men in God’s world. If anyone is to blame for the spinelessness and ineptitude of modern men it is not their mothers, wives and girlfriends but their fathers, and so today most sons, who have long stopped fearing God and paying attention to God’s wisdom.

Romans 1:21-23 although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man (pornography)

According to the wisdom of God, this is what men should do:

Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path.

Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding.

The father of a righteous man has great joy; he who has a wise son delights in him.

Proverbs 23:19-24

If men were wise, they (we) wouldn’t get “castrated” by bossy women.

Protect your child's ears this bonfire night

Halloween will soon be gone and Bonfire night will be upon us. With bonfire nights, come noisy fireworks displays. Fireworks are one of my favourite things, they’re exciting and I love the noise, the lights and the special effects – very Disney!

If, like us, you’d like to take your children to see a fireworks display, you’re probably worried about their ears. Obviously it’s very important to protect their ears, as they can end up being permanently damaged if they are subjected to loud noises. Last year I was at a Madonna concert. Her kids were at the back of the stage and you could see they had ear defenders on – just like those the ground crew wear when a plane takes off/lands or you see men drilling the roads with them on.

I thought that was a good idea, so we actually looked online and got some last November, in time for Bonfire night. Our daughter was one but she refused point blank to let us put the defenders on her, let alone keep them on. Of course, she had no understanding of why she should wear them. So we abandoned our plans to watch the fireworks. This year, we’re hoping she might be a bit more accommodating as we’re hoping to go to the display at Bishop’s Park in Fulham on Friday 6 November. If not then it’ll be another quiet night in!

We got some Peltor Kids ones (see picture) which cost £13.95 and come in pink or lime green. They have foam-filled ear cushions and are lightweight-ish. For 0-7 year olds.

Fashion Accessories to Suit Your Personality

Style is something that is very personal. Each person has their own unique and individual style that says something about who they are including their history and their personality. If you want to look really stylish, you should always feel comfortable and relaxed in your clothes. You should choose clothes and Fashion Accessories to suit your shape, colouring, lifestyle, personality and budget. A great way to develop your own style is by finding key classic pieces of clothing that look amazing on you and are versatile, then dress up with Fashion Accessories that show your personality for lots of different looks.

If you are fun loving and have a sense of humour, then try finding bold and unusual accessories like Madonna in these Louis Vuitton bunny ears.

If you love feeling relaxed and chilled out, then go for the Boho style with hoop earrings like Kate Hudson or Boho beaded necklaces.

If you like to look gorgeous but in a low key way, understated fashion jewelry is the way to go. Try simple pendant necklaces like Alexa Cheung

Grace Jones e Cher super discretas

A cantora de clássicos como “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun“, “True Colors” e “Time After Time”, Cyndi Lauper hoje exibe um visual mais discreto.

Gaga relançará “The Fame”, agora “The Fame: Monster” em novembro. É esperar e ver o resultado.

Strange – Grace Jones

If You Forget Me

By: Madonna

If  You Forget Me

I want you to know one thing
You know how this is

If I look at the crystal moon
At the red branch of the slow autumn at my window
If I touch near the fire the impalpable ash
Or the wrinkled body of the log
Everything carries me to you
As if everything that exists – aromas, light, metals
Were little boats that sail toward those isles of yours that wait for me

Well, now
If little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you
Little by little
If suddenly you forget me
Do not look for me
For I shall already have forgotten you

If you think it long and mad the wind of banners that passes through my life
And you decide to leave me at the shore of the heart where I have roots
Remember
That on that day, at that hour, I shall lift my arms
And my roots will set off to seek another land

But if each day, each hour, you feel that you are destined for me
With implacable sweetness
If each day a flower climbs up to your lips to seek me
Ahh my love, ahh my own, in me all that fire is repeated
In me nothing is extinguished or forgotten
My love feeds on your love, beloved
And as long as you live, it will be in your arms without leaving mine

MADONNA: LOVE PROFUSION (VIDEO 54)

On the Street: The Annals of Outrageous Self-Invention, 1980-1990

Photography by: Amy Arbus

On the Street is a collection of photographs by Amy Arbus, which were selected from Arbus’s photo-column that ran in The Village Voice between 1980 and 1990, a page that documented New York City’s downtown area’s most vibrant, creative dressers and personalities (many of the photographs were also published in a book).  Amy Arbus has been photographing professionally for more than 25 years.  She has been a contributing photographer to the New York Magazine theater section, and her photographs have appeared in over one hundred periodicals, including The New Yorker, Aperture, People Magazine, ESPN, and The New York Times Magazine.  She is the daughter of the late photographer Diane Arbus.

Now that Manhattan is only habitable for the rich, many New Yorkers love to reminiscently look back to the mad and crazy ‘80s, when the Bowery could be quite dangerous and apartments were still affordable.  Nostalgia presently stalks the five boroughs, whether for acid-washed rap-fashion, Mudd Club art parties or coke in sleazy bars.  But back in the original 1980s-1990s, Amy Arbus found the subjects for her extremely unique photographs mostly by just wandering around the Village, looking for people who were wearing visually creative and unusual outfits, a lot of polka dots, or stripes, or everyone wearing hats in the summertime.  At the time, there was nothing else like it.  Now there are a lot of similar things, but back at the original time there hadn’t been any kind of record of the East Village scene when it was comprised of this particularly promising, hopeful group of talented, interesting people.

Describing her pictures from this 1980s-1990s collection, Arbus stated, “In terms of the clothes, I think they were fantastic and funny and outrageous and silly….There was no kind of judgment going on at the time.  Everyone wanted to be noticed, no matter what it was for.  That’s completely gone.  Being noticed is irrelevant now.  You have to make such waves to be a success at things now that dressing differently may make an impression, but it’s not going to get you a career.”

Included here are a number of Arbus’s vintage photographs, a video from  her documentary film On the Street, a full-screen high-resolution slide show and an additional audio-slide show of Arbus’s photography.

- Ela já me ligou três vezes.

- Minha magia é a negra, e isto acelerará o processo.

– admite a rainha do pop.

‘Into the Groove’ é outra canção que eu sinto cantando retardado, mas todo mundo parece gostar disso.

Balmain

Nüüd on patshokid uuenduskuuri läbinud ja kõige vingema “uue mudeli” autoriks on Balmain’i moemaja disainer Christophe Decarnin.
Ütlen ausalt, et enne eelmist sügist ei olnud ma  Balmainist midagi kuulnud, kuid nüüd on Christophe Decarnini looming üks minu favoriite. Miks see suhteliselt piiratud värvigammaga looming võlub?

NEW MIX: 10/09/09

Cover art for Vinyl Shuffle mixtape 10/09/09

Recorded on a Friday night after a nice Sushi date at our favorite Sushi restaurant in all of SoCal (9 Style Sushi in San Clemente).

The records on this track start with a rare Paul McCartney interview album, complete with random background noises.  He talks about musical influences, rambling into the Pepper years, and then gets confused by a memory of recording out of tune on Rubber Soul… Errr… Wait, Revolver.  Cut.  Next up is my favorite Madness song, “Michael Caine”.  You can’t go wrong with Michael Caine’s voice over a Madness song. Speaking of artists that begin with “M”, check out the Madonna “Give it 2 Me” remix on picture disk. How about more “M”s?  Like Mandrill’s  “Universal Rhythms” – not a song I’d put in a typical mix, but randomly, it’s a good separator between Madonna and Al Jarreau’s “We Got By”.  Well, that’s marks the end of the alliterative tribute to the letter “M” on this masterful mix.  Only a game such as Vinyl Shuffle could produce such an poetic beginning… I could say this mix falls apart from here… I mean… “Exile”?  After listening to this the next day, my thought is that it certainly does not.

Sad but totally-true day-after story: I left the last album of this mix, “Get Happy” by Elvis Costello, on the turntable last night.  And I left the dust cover off.  When I opened the blinds the next morning, the blinds fell and knocked down a wooden model ship (of the “Cutty Sark”) from the window sill. The Cutty Sark fell onto the record and cut a deep groove into the vinyl across four songs.  RUINED!  I raised my fists into the air, immediately thought of John Cusack, and blamed him!  Here’s why:

  • John Cusack starred in “High Fidelity” in 2000.  A movie about an emo record collector and serial monogamist.
  • The last song I played on this mix?  “High Fidelity”, by Elvis Costello.
  • A different Elvis Costello song appeared on the soundtrack of “High Fidelity”… That song?  “Shipbuilding”
  • What fell down and ruined my record?  The Cutty Sark.  A ship.

Well, maybe Elvis Costello is to blame just as much, but I’m pretty sure John Cusack had a hand it this.

Coincidence or not, Jesus Luz moved into a $ 2.7 million apartment near Madonna's Upper East Side villa.

Apparently, considering that it is still too early to move with her and her children, the pop queen decided that the only way Jesus could be closer to her was to become neighbors.
Madonna (51 years), who lives with her children in a house in Upper East Side of New York, worth 40 million dollars, wants her boyfriend, Jesus Luz (22 years), to be closer to her and decided to pay to fulfill this desire. So the singer turned to her real estate agents to find him an apartment, which will be purchased on his behalf, declared a source for a British tabloid.

I love Seoul.
