How Do You Justify a PhD in Literature?

OK, so I got asked this question recently. (My response probably should have been, “How do you justify the Wal Mart door greeter position?” or, “How do you justify a Vice-CEO position in a company that employs 30 people, fired five of them, works the rest overtime now, and still has three Vice-CEOs?”  or, “How do you justify a research team working on the latest anti-wrinkle cream using theories and materials that could actually be applied to, say, finding more effective ways of treating burn victims?” But, I digress…)

Here’s my response to the question posed – why a PhD in literature, and specifically in medieval literature, is justifiable. It’s not as complete or as thorough a response as it probably could be, but if it were, I’d have written a book (hmmmmm….not a bad idea…! ;op) For now, though, it gets the job done in terms of explaining why literature will always be important as a field of scholarly study.

Well, not to sound too biased, but I think those who study medieval literature know, in a way that many cannot, that what we do is fundamental to the understanding of why western society is what it is, and I believe that by studying the literature, analyzing it, comparing it to other literatures, and exposing the contents of it, medievalists can help modern society come to a deeper and more basic understanding of itself – thus laying the groundwork for change and evolution of our culture, if anyone will listen or really cares to evolve as a society.

I will lay out three examples to demonstrate why I think it is more than relevant, but in fact absolutely necessary, to seek to understand what was going on in the Middle Ages – which, of course, is recorded in the texts that are left to us, if you dig deeply enough.

First: the medieval era was the era in which everything we think and feel about gender differences in our society first coalesced. You want to know why the nineteenth century focused so heavily on the Madonna-Virgin-Whore paradigm, and why Britney Spears at 16 was the Princess of Pop and at 21 was washed up and condemned as a slutty has-been, while Jude Law can spread his seed with impunity and maintain his “sexiest man alive” status? Medievalists know. In the 4th century, St. Jerome codified Catholic thought through the creation and dissemination of the Vulgate Latin Bible – which became the cornerstone text of Catholic thought for the next thousand years, until the Protestant Reformation and the King James version of the Bible. Based on Jerome’s textual choices (and he definitely picked and chose; for a VERY interesting experience pick up The Other Bible and take a look at how differently everything would have evolved in terms of the equality of the sexes if he had chosen from the other texts available at the time, much less Mary Magdalene’s gospel – the only one by a woman, which was conveniently dropped from the canon). According to Christian doctrine, the teachings of Church Fathers, and the paradigms set up by such, Eve was inferior to Adam, and through that inferiority and her subsequent womanly wiles, she became responsible for everything bad that happened to humanity, including, by passing on her temptable defect, the first murder via her eldest son, Cain. It’s all her fault. The Church spent the next thousand years condemning women as the weaker and lesser sex – except, of course, for Mary – the paradigm of greatness, virtue, and perfection in woman, who as the Virgin-Mother of God’s son redeemed Eve’s behavior through her perfect sacrifice, but did so in a way no other woman could ever hope to live up to – thus setting the stage for every subsequent woman on earth to fail at atoning for Eve’s sin. This was the accepted truth, and it became so ingrained in the Western cultural tradition that it became self-propagating. We STILL to this day live by this code of thought, even if we wilfully choose not to believe it. But I swear to you, that if there is a group of five people working together on a project, and four of the people are men and the fifth is a woman, if the project goes bust the four men WILL blame it on the woman either in their heads or vocally, and the woman WILL assume she is being fingered because she’s a woman, and this is no matter what the circumstances behind the failure actually are. That is because in the Middle Ages – in nearly every (western)text you can read from the medieval period, this is in some way played out – and that’s because the Church held such sway over the society that it filtered through to the core of that society’s identity.

Which brings us to the question of identity. National, that is. We want so badly to pretend there’s no such thing as national thought, and that in our modern, global, multicultural society such things as national boundaries shouldn’t exist and / or matter, but they do. And that started in the medieval era. As powers coalesced and modern European nations began to form into what they are today, the writers of those nations crafted identities for them via epics. This is not new – Homer did it, Virgil did it. The writer of the Song of Roland and the Charlemagne cycle did it for France, crafting that nation as a great one ruled by the most perfect, Christian King in accordance with God’s will to divine rule and justice for all believers (which politically eventually worked its way from absolute monarchy to socialism). The writers of the Arthurian tradition in Britain did it, rendering Arthur also the most perfect, Christian king – only, in Arthur’s case, the focus was not so much on the justice through God and worship as it was on the unification of the various individual communities in England – because in an island nation, that was more important than the Crusading going on in the mainland(which politically eventually worked its way from absolute monarchy to a monarchic figurehead and a more democratic, Parliamentary government – and moved to the USA as an experiment in democracy from the beginning). And on, and on. Every country has a foundational story. The writers of that country did that, and the stories evolved over time to accommodate the changes and shifts socio-historically within the country. And therefore, national identity is a fictitious creation that was crafted to aid in the foundation and propaganda of the developing nations – in the Middle Ages. We still adhere to so many of those codified ideals today, and if you look at places where the French and British settled, these ideas came along for the ride. If we as literary critics can study these foundations, through the texts, expose the fictions, and explain how they work, then we can actually begin the foundation of a new modern understanding of societies – and THAT might actually begin the talks we think we are having, but really aren’t. There’s too much fiction in the way for modern countries to be able to reach common ground. The study and understanding of those fictions can pave the way for a common, human baseline from which to begin real negotiations for a global community.

Finally, we think we are so much more sophisticated and humane in the modern world than “they were in the Middle Ages”. But that is also a fiction. In studying and comparing medieval texts and modern culture, we can see so clearly that nothing has really changed. We can pretend we are more humane all we want to, but the fact is that torture is still used in the modern world, by societies that claim there is no torture being used, and a lot of the methods we still use today were used in the Middle Ages. We still have mass killings and wars over religious and economic issues. We still have the upper classes and the lower classes, the haves and the have nots. We still have those who are untouchable in terms of being punished for wrongdoings because of their position in society. We still have violence, rape, murder, incest, infidelity and affairs – all of which was occurring in the medieval societies, and recorded in the texts. In the end, the human condition is the human condition, and while we can go ahead and pretend we are more sophisticated, more worldly, kinder and gentler, a true comparative reading of popular culture in the Middle Ages and popular culture now tells us otherwise. We have the capability to be more than we are – but only if we are honest about things. It’s the literature that can show us where to go and what to do, if we are brave enough to point it out and demand that others look more truthfully and closely at it.

Everything that has happened in western society since the medieval era, has been a response to the medieval era. It has either held up what was believed, refuted what was believed, added to what was believed, developed what was believed, or responded to what was believed -as that belief was recorded, in the texts left to us.

There’s a place for science, Math and technology in the modern world, and that place is very obvious. Likewise with service-oriented professions like medicine, social work, and education, and for politics and government. But the linchpin of it all – in my opinion – is the literature. It is the human record, and without it we would not know what has gone before, what has been done, what has been dreamed. We would have nothing against which to compare our existence or our achievements, and nothing to show us where we have gone wrong and what we can do better. My argument stands, as it has always stood, that history repeats itself, that history is recorded in the texts left to us, and that literary studies is the backbone of every other subject matter and every human endeavor.

'Beautiful Day' Director Reteams With Lady Gaga For 'Telephone'

It’s March 16th and someone not named Bono looks vaguely like The Fly in today’s banner.

(Related: The Making of “Beautiful Day”)

Director Jonas Akerlund (pictured above) is best known to U2 fans for directing “Beautiful Day” and the Rio de Janeiro version of “Walk On.” However, he’s received some considerable press in the past week for his latest work, the music video / short film for Lady Gaga and Beyonce’s “Telephone.”

Although the controversial sequel to “Paparazzi” has garnered him plenty of attention, it may not be his biggest — or even his most controversial. And while popularity and notoriety have been key in achieving “Telephone’s” level of buzz, Akerlund seems to have little interest in either.

“I’m never on an ego trip doing music videos,” he told Wannahaves. “I always try to figure out what I believe that the artist needs for the moment.”

By positioning himself as an enabler, Akerlund has honed his craft with a variety of acts, including Christina Aguilera, Metallica, the Cardigans, Rammstein and Robbie Williams. His breakthroughs came with the videos for Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up” and Madonna’s “Ray of Light.” The former was banned in several markets, offering the group a new degree of attention, while the latter received widespread acclaim and a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video.

Given his facilitator philosophy and the diversity of his collaborations, Akerland’s output has incredible range. “It could be anything from between something really emotional or beautiful to something extremely controversial or different,” he said.

He points to the Caridgans’ deliberately post-”Lovefool” video for “My Favourite Game” as an example of his having helped realize the artists’ vision instead of dictating direction.

“That was a work together with [the Cardigans] and them wanting to get out of that old image,” Akerlund said. “I guess I helped them with that, but if I didn’t do it, they would have done it with somebody else or by themselves anyway.”

You can watch both of his U2 collaborations below. A Jonas Akerlund playlist containing most of his videography is also available on YouTube.

Bad Advice Women Get: Know Your Fashion Sex

As I was browsing Jezebel yesterday, I came across this post, which links to a weird article in Britain’s Sunday Times called “What is your fashion sex?” Intrigued, I clicked on the link and was immediately transported to a strange world where phrases like “aggro frog move” and “bodycon dresses” apparently mean something.

But the article’s vocabulary isn’t the only baffling thing about it. In the piece, author Shane Watson proposes that all women have a “fashion sex,” a sort of gendered style that comes naturally to them.

Confused? So was I. Watson tries to explain herself by pinpointing the “fashion sexes” of some celebrities: “Anyone can see that Scarlett Johansson is a Girl, who should stick to asset-flaunting bodycon dresses” (whatever those are), she writes, while Kristen Stewart is “a tomboy through and through” whose outfits should never clash with her “natural urge to look a bit rough, undone, cool and … boyish.” Madonna is another celeb who Watson classifies as boyish: her “DNA is probably 12% bloke — in a good way. It’s the reason she looks like a man in drag in a pussy-bow blouse, but fabulously hot in a pair of chaps,” Watson writes.

I guess what this really means is that, according to Watson, women are innately either traditionally feminine, a little more hard-edged (read: manly), or androgynous. These traits are “non-negotiable,” she says, meaning that an inherently girly girl should never wear “the leather trousers, jacket and peaked-cap look” that serves Catherine Zeta-Jones so ill in the picture that accompanies the article.

Of course, the thing is that in that picture, Zeta-Jones doesn’t look uncomfortable or inappropriate. She’s Catherine-frickin’-Zeta-Jones—even if she hasn’t made a good movie since winning a Best Supporting Actress for Chicago, one thing she does have going for her is that she’s still one of the most beautiful women on the planet (and a very lucrative deal with T-Mobile). I think she would probably look smoking even if she was wearing a burlap sack and one of those big, furry Russian hats.

The notion of fashion sex is totally ludicrous; having short hair or, in Stewart’s case, a curiously surly demeanor (does that girl just not know how to smile?) doesn’t make a woman un-feminine—look at a pixie-haired Halle Berry in that famous Oscars dress, for just one example of why Watson is completely wrong. Hell, even K-Stew looked pretty, classy and, dare I say, comfortably girly at last week’s Oscars. So-called “boyish” types can look great wearing frilly dresses, and so-called “girly” types can look amazing in jeans and distressed Chucks.

Every girl should wear whatever she wants without fear that she’s somehow going against “type,” whatever that means. There’s no sense in pigeonholing yourself to just one kind of look, especially if you’re only doing it because some crazy British lady thinks you should.

SongOfTheDay

And he said to me, he said to me:
“Do not seal up the words of the prophecy, for the time is near
Let the evildoers still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy
And the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy
Behold, I am coming soon
I am the alpha and the omega
The first and the last
The beginning and the end.”

Top 200 Songs from the 90s - #79

#79 – Madonna – “Ray Of Light” – (1998)

Ray of Light was Madonna’s best effort from the 90s (or ever). Some of the music on this album, especially this song, was more electronic in style than the straightforward pop style everyone was used to from her. This song borders on trance music and the music video was available in “Special Edition VHS” format (how 90s is that?). Some other singles from this album include “Frozen” and “The Power of Good-Bye” – although in 1999 she had a hit with the theme to the second Austin Powers movie with “Beautiful Stranger.”

MADONNA MESSES WITH JENNIFER ANISTON'S FAVORITE TOY, OSCARS 2010

Madonna was spotted getting down and dancing with Gerad Butler, Jennifer Aniston’s favorite Scottish toy, Gerard Butler, from exotic Scotland, at her Hollywood Oscars party in the Hollywood Hills.

Apparently Madge got down and dirty with Gerard on the d-floor, while Demi Moore danced with daughter Rumor Willis and Lenny Kravitz with daughter Zoe on the d-florr with them. And everyone else cheered the A-List stars on.

Subtext: Brad, Angie and their children were missed at Oscars 2010…. and peple like them with second generation Hollywood kids, rule! Not a very nice game to play to play on Aniston, who hasn’t bred; but Madonna sent her message to Jennifer Aniston’s camp loud and clear, anyways. Once a diva…

Madonna’s brother mocks her marriage referee role

Christopher Ciccone has mocked his sister Madonna’s new role as a marriage referee in an upcoming small screen series.

Ciccone, who left the Queen of Pop fuming with the publication of his tell-all book, openly disapproved the twice-divorced singer’s involvement with the new American TV show The Marriage Ref.

“I can’t imagine what she’s doing on The Marriage Ref giving advice to married couples,” the Daily Star quoted him as telling the New York Post.

He added: “I guess it’s kind of ironic. Everyone has their experiences regarding marriage: hers are maybe what not to do.”

[44] Madonna, 'Music'

Right back on track after Ray Of Light, Madonna shed the pretend hippie skin once more and sunk her teeth into the dancefloor like never before since Vogue. A squirty disco match-up with Mirwais, Music jacks your body. It still sounds as fresh as Michelle Gayle in Grange Hill. Or was she Fly?

Junior says: “Her skin looks lovely,” on the cover, that is. And, “Play it again.”

Best bit: Space Odyssey synths.

#8 - Madonna

im trying to scrape together a living as a madonna lookalike
performing on stages across the country
one night, during a performance of like a virgin, you catch my eye, a dark handsome stranger in a far corner of the bar smoking a cigarette, evidently oblivious to the customary ban on such things,
after the show, i go to speak to you, and you tell me that i am the finest madonna imitator you have ever seen and you’ve seen lady gaga in concert
and then we have sex on top of a mountain of conical bras

As American as bagels & lox

By Rabbi Leonard Rosenthal

SAN DIEGO–When the singer Madonna, who is a disciple of the Kabbalah Center, decided that she wanted a Hebrew name, I found it ironic that she chose “Esther.” Esther is not a Hebrew name. Megillat Esther, the Scroll of Esther in the Bible, informs us that Esther’s Hebrew name was Hadassah, which means “myrtle.” Esther was her Persian name and is derived from the goddess Ishtar. So Madonna choose a Hebrew name which is really a Persian name which means “Ishtar, the pagan goddess.”

But one can hardly blame Madonna because the truth is that Esther is commonly used as a “Hebrew” or “Jewish” name. In fact there are many Hebrew names which were adopted from other cultures and languages, including Mordechai, Alexander, and Moses (an Egyptian name.) The adoption of such names into Jewish culture indicates that Judaism has always been open to outside cultural influences, sometimes to a greater and sometimes to a lesser degree.

But the division between Jewish and non-Jewish is permeable in both directions. Especially in the United States we find many influences of Jews and Jewish tradition on American culture.

One example: I stopped at a local coffee cart this week and prominently displayed on the pastry shelf was a jar filled with hamantaschen and labeled as such. Yiddishisms have crept into the American vocabulary (kosher, shmooze, shlep, etc.), and bagels and lox have become as American as hot dogs and apple pie.

When Haman approached the king and asked permission to kill the Jews, one of his arguments was: “There is a certain people, scattered and dispersed among the other peoples in all the provinces of your realm, whose laws are different from those of any other people, and who do not obey the king’s laws; and it is not in Your Majesty’s interest to tolerate them.” (Esther 3:8)  That is, Haman’s strongest argument against the Jews of Persia was that they were different.

That argument would be difficult to make in America for while we Jews still are a unique cultural and religious slice of the American population, we certainly fit in. Not only have we wholeheartedly bought into the American dream and American culture, many aspects of Jewish culture have become American as well.

The positive of this is diminished anti-Semitism and widespread acceptance of Jews by most Americans. The downside is our concern that one day the barrier between Jew and non-Jew will become so permeable that the former will simply osmose into the latter. Such is the challenge to Jews and Judaism in an open and tolerant society.

Billboard’s Top Music Money-Makers 2009

40. Bette Midler
$9,421,947
Bette Midler has long been a successful touring artist, but her 90-date sitdown at Las Vegas’ Colosseum at Caesars Palace accounted for all her box-office revenue in 2009, as well as the overwhelming bulk of her income for the year. Even so, she did better than many artists with her digital tracks, presumably with lots of “Wind Beneath My Wings” downloads.

39. Leonard Cohen
$9,511,958
Leonard Cohen played his first U.S. concert in 15 years in February 2009. The show kicked off a successful year on the road that earned him $9.2 million in box-office share, dwarfing his $236,200 in CD royalties and $34,748 in digital album royalties.list divider

38. Bob Dylan
$9,610,011
He may be one of America’s most prolific songwriters and recording artists, but Bob Dylan is raking it in these days with his 20-plus-year Never Ending Tour. His box-office share in 2009 was $7.4 million, compared with $1.5 million in CD royalties, $154,592 in digital album royalties, $121,955 in digital track royalties and $350,514 in songwriter mechanical royalties.

37. Phish
$9,998,242
The jam band reunited in 2009, and while new album “Joy” didn’t exactly fly off the shelves, it did provide new material to play on a sold-out tour that included a high-grossing two-night stand at Bonnaroo and the band’s own Halloween Phish-fest in Indio, Calif.

36. Andrea Bocelli
$10,711,746
A touring favorite who earned $6.1 million on the road last year, classical crossover star Andrea Bocelli also banked $4.4 million in CD royalties and $121,100 in digital album royalties.

35. Cher
$11,421,553
Cher hasn’t released a studio album since 2002’s “Living Proof,” but she’s been a live blockbuster ever since. The singer took Celine Dion’s place at Caesars Palace in 2008, and her successful Cher at the Colosseum residency earned her $11.2 million.

34. Kiss
$11,833,930
Kiss spent 2009 on the road promoting its highest-charting album, the Walmart exclusive “Sonic Boom,” which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and sold 238,000 copies. The new set helped Kiss earn $10.6 million in touring revenue and $879,000 in album sales.

33. Toby Keith
$11,941,345
Stateside fans weren’t the only ones treated to Toby Keith’s Ford-sponsored tour in 2009–the artist also played his first European trek in support of his latest album, “American Ride,” which sold 295,000 copies and debuted at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart. Touring revenue totaled slightly more than $10 million.

32. Green Day
$12,152,004
Green Day had two major highlights in 2009: the release of its second No. 1 album, “21st Century Breakdown,” and a sellout run in Berkeley, Calif., of the musical stage show adaptation of 2004 set “American Idiot.” All of the buzz helped the band earn nearly $1.9 million in album sales and pull in $8.8 million from touring arenas.

31. Paul McCartney
$12,203,170
Although his Beatles take isn’t factored into his Money Makers earnings, Paul McCartney did just fine on his own last year, making most of his money ($11.4 million) from playing arenas, stadiums and a headlining slot at Coachella. His latest release, “Good Evening New York City,” sold 234,000 copies, contributing to the $609,000 he earned from album sales.

30. Lil Wayne
$12,866,174
The soon-to-be-incarcerated rap star will be missed by fans and promoters. In 2009 he had the highest-grossing hip-hop tour of the year — and the most lucrative rap trek that Billboard has ever tracked, raking in $10.4 million.

29. Tina Turner
$13,169,806
The 71-year-old artist is still going strong, as evidenced by her Farewell European tour, which earned her $13 million. Turner also scored $116,700 in CD sales.

28. Keith Urban
$14,075,581
Keith Urban scored his first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 last April with his 2009 album, “Defying Gravity.” The set sold 723,000 copies and helped him earn $1.4 million in CD sales. The artist’s Escape Together world tour, which visited arenas in the United States, earned nearly $12 million.

27. Brad Paisley
$14,299,322
Established as a hitmaker and an album seller, Brad Paisley has consistently been improving his clout at the box office in the past several years. He’s now an arena-level headliner, but Paisley’s popularity is due to his songs. Country music isn’t especially known for its strength at digital, but Paisley enjoyed close to 3 million track downloads.list divider

26. Celine Dion
$14,326,129
Last year, Celine Dion’s take came almost entirely from 23 North America dates on her Taking Chances tour. This is her third year in a row on the Money Makers list; she came in at No. 5 last time, thanks to her residency at Caesars Palace’s Colosseum in Las Vegas and her worldwide touring.

25. Kings Of Leon
$14,421,763
In 2009, Kings of Leon finally broke through in America, selling more than 1.2 million units. KOL also taps into a digital-friendly audience, racking up more than 500,000 album sales and more than 5 million tracks in the format. And it’s all about the upside with this band, as it continues to grow as a headliner, netting $9.9 million from touring.list divider

24. Trans-Siberian Orchestra
$14,606,313
Steady sales of its holiday-themed albums during Christmastime aren’t the only thing Trans-Siberian Orchestra relies on each year: The band consistently sells out arenas during the nine-week winter season with its over-the-top laser- and light-filled concerts. Last year, the Paul O’Neill-led group sold 815,000 albums and earned nearly $13 million in touring revenue. list divider

23. Billy Joel
$15,721,607
Though he hasn’t released an album of new material since “River of Dreams” in 1993, Billy Joel’s catalog performed well on all fronts. But on the Joel spreadsheet, that’s a drop in the bucket; the resonance of his songs, consistent road work and reputation as a top-shelf live performer during the past four decades continue to serve him best.list divider

22. Depeche Mode
$16,035,102
While Depeche Mode’s Tour of the Universe trek was briefly put on hold when frontman Dave Gahan fell ill, the group still took in $15.4 million for the world tour, according to Boxscore. The band’s album”Sounds of the Universe” earned $300,000 in CD royalties.

21. Taylor Swift
$17,204,646
At an age when many of her peers are working for minimum wage, Taylor Swift is in the big leagues of earners. Her financial package is well-rounded, and she’s one of the few on this list whose income wasn’t driven mostly by touring — her touring revenue accounted for less than half of her Money Makers total, and her CD royalties were topped only by Michael Jackson.

20. Michael Jackson
$17,301,639
Michael Jackson was the No. 1 earner in CD and ringtone royalties in 2009, with physical album sales pulling in $13.2 million and ringtones totaling $255,000. In addition, “This Is It” became the top-grossing concert film of all time, earning $72 million at the box office, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.list divider

19. Rascal Flatts
$17,996,964
It’s a safe bet that exposure through sponsorships from Hershey’s and JCPenney helped Rascal Flatts sell tickets to its 2009 summer amphitheater tour. Overall, the trio pulled in $14.3 million from 55 concerts that were reported to Boxscore. Indeed, the total gross was enough to land Rascal Flatts at No. 22 on Billboard’s 2009 tally of the top 25 highest-grossing tours. The band’s 2009 album, “Unstoppable,” was also a contributing factor to its success, with 1.1 million copies sold.

18. Andre Rieu
$19,468,768
The Dutch violinist and PBS pledge-drive mainstay sold only 59,000 albums but was No. 6 on Billboard’s list of top tours last year; his 30th-anniversary trek earned him more than $19 million and brought in nearly 500,000 people to 94 shows in Europe, Japan, North America, Australia and New Zealand in 2009. Rieu has logged 22 releases on Billboard’s Top Traditional Classical Albums chart, with three of them in the top 10 last year.list divider

17. Dave Matthews Band
$20,046,148
No act has sold more tickets in this millennium than Dave Matthews Band, and in 2009 the group also received some serious juice from one of its best-selling albums, “Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King.” The strength of the record’s performance boosted DMB back into the company of elite earners. The band’s 800,000 Nielsen SoundScan units dwarf the band’s 14,788 digital album sales, but it did enjoy more than 2 million track downloads.

16. Il Divo
$20,909,735
The Armani-clad popera quartet lands at No. 16 this year thanks to a global tour promoted by Live Nation. Il Divo’s 118 dates in 2009 put $20 million in their suit pockets, with an estimated value of nearly $21 million for the band. That comprises nearly all of Il Divo’s take; the act’s next-largest source of revenue ($809,300) was physical sales of its albums, nearly half of which came from its late-2008 release “The Promise.”

15. Miley Cyrus
$21,285,996
Miley Cyrus is No. 4 on the 2010 Money Makers list in terms of CD royalties with more than $4.3 million; her one new release during the year was the Walmart-exclusive EP “The Time of Our Lives.” Cyrus’ Wonder World tour earned her slightly more than $15 million, according to Boxscore. Not included in this tally, but still of note: Her feature-film debut, “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” grossed $79.5 million at the box office, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.

14. Elton John
$22,141,315
As half of the most successful co-headlining tour in history with Billy Joel, as well as being very active on his own, Elton John again struck box-office gold in 2009. Even without an album of new material, John still moved a quarter of a million physical units in the United States.list divider

13. Beyonce
$23,658,131
The millions of YouTube views for the “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” video could mean only one thing: Beyoncé continued to reap rewards for her triple-threat artistry in 2009. The singer earned $2.3 million in CD royalties for her latest album, “I Am… Sasha Fierce,” a total rivaled only by Nickelback in the top 15 of the Money Makers list. The set was just as well-received from a critical perspective–it won six 2010 Grammy Awards, the most ever for a female artist.

12. Nickelback
$23,674,124
Nonstop touring and continued radio play were two of the factors that contributed to Nickelback’s 2009 success. The band sold 1.9 million albums, the majority of which came from its most recent release, 2008’s “Dark Horse,” which sold 1.4 million copies. And fans didn’t stop seeing Nickelback in concert, either. During the year, the group played 73 amphitheater and arena shows that earned it $18.3 million and drew more than 1 million people.

11. Fleetwood Mac
$24,751,540
The baby boomer idols land on the list for the first time thanks to the group’s $24 million take from its Unleashed tour, its first in five years. The trek grossed $71.2 million from 65 shows reported to Boxscore and landed at No. 14 on Billboard’s top tours list last year. Fleetwood Mac earned less than $700,000 in the United States from its album sales, with its 1988 “Greatest Hits” moving 135,000 copies — about half its U.S. album total for the period.

10. Metallica
$25,564,234
Metallica had at least two things to celebrate in 2009: its induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the release of “Guitar Hero: Metallica.” Along with touring revenue — the band pulled in $22.8 million from 55 arena shows reported to Boxscore that drew more than 968,000 fans — Metallica sold 694,000 albums in 2009. The majority of those sales came from its Rick Rubin-produced 2008 release, “Death Magnetic” (297,000). Album sales revenue totaled $1.6 million. And most of Metallica’s track download earnings came from its 1991 hit “Enter Sandman,” which sold 450,000.

9. Kenny Chesney
$26,581,141
As one of the elite touring artists in the world, Kenny Chesney has sold more than 1 million tickets for seven consecutive years. In country music, the big ticket sellers also sit atop radio and retail charts, and Chesney is no exception, with physical album sales in the United States running roughly the same as tickets sold. His digital track numbers are also among the highest on this list, and the country star rang up more than half a million ringtones in 2009.list divider

8. Coldplay
$27,326,562
Coldplay didn’t let a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by guitarist Joe Satriani dampen its spirits last year. Despite the legal turmoil (the two parties settled in September and the allegations were dismissed), the band earned $24.7 million touring behind its 2008 album, “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends,” which sold 495,000 copies in 2009. Overall, the group sold 852,000 albums in 2009, bringing in $1 million in revenue. list divider

7. Jonas Brothers
$33,596,576
The Jonas Brothers released their fourth studio album,”Lines, Vines and Trying Times” (Hollywood) June 15, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and setting up the boy band for another fruitful year of album sales and touring. The act racked up almost $1.3 million in CD royalties. The band’s world tour netted them $31.4 million and won the group the Eventful Fans’ Choice Award at the 2009 Billboard Touring Awards.list divider

6. Pink
$36,347,658
Even before she lofted herself onto a trapeze at the MTV Video Music Awards, Pink was already having the best year of her career. She officially shook her underdog status in 2008 with the release of “Funhouse,” but 2009 vaulted her to new heights thanks in part to an international arena tour, which netted her $35 million. Moreover, Pink’s show-stopping 2010 Grammy Awards performance of “Glitter in the Air” — and the track’s subsequent 1,143% digital sales increase — means that her funhouse is still open for business.list divider

5. Britney Spears
$38,885,267
It seemed unlikely that Britney Spears could ever recover professionally from a series of bizarre events that led up to her 2008 “Circus” CD. But the album bowed atop the Billboard 200 in December of that year, and the pop star’s success continued into 2009 with an arena tour that earned her $36.4 million and album sales that totaled 763,000 copies. Digitally, Spears sold 7.5 million downloads; the largest seller was the racy Max Martin-produced single, “3,” which moved 1.6 million downloads.

4. AC/DC
$43,650,466
Although the overwhelming majority of AC/DC’s 2009 earnings came from touring international arenas and stadiums (it pulled in $41.4 million from concerts and ranked No. 4 on Billboard’s 2009 tally of the top 25 highest-grossing tours), the Australian rockers also experienced consistent album sales from their catalog. Indeed, the group’s highest-selling album was its 2008 Walmart exclusive, “Black Ice,” which shifted 227,000 copies. But coming in at a close second was the classic “Back in Black,” with 215,000 copies. In total, the group sold 1.1 million albums in 2009.

3. Madonna
$47,237,774
Like U2, Madonna toured for the first time under a long-term multirights Live Nation deal (hers valued at $120 million), and also like U2 it’s a performance-based pact. Madonna delivered: Her Sticky & Sweet tour tacked on a “victory lap” run of international stadium dates that solidified the trek as the highest-grossing tour ever by a solo artist. Madonna’s CD sales were well off the pace of her peak hitmaking years, but still more than respectable at physical and digital. Because her songs come from a wide range of writers, the publishing pie is pretty well-sliced. But her branding, licensing and merch efforts are among the most diversified and lucrative in the music business.

2. Bruce Springsteen
$57,619,037
With a new studio album, a Walmart-exclusive hits compilation and a relentless touring schedule, Bruce Springsteen was at the top of his revenue-generating game in 2009. Springsteen’s profile has never been higher, with added-value exposure from the Super Bowl halftime show, Kennedy Center Honors and even a run-in with Ticketmaster all keeping the Boss in the public eye. Springsteen was also a force at retail and on the digital sales front, with more than 2 million tracks downloaded. And since he writes all his own songs, publishing revenue stays at Camp Bruce. Remarkably, Springsteen Inc. is peaking more than 35 years after his debut album.

1. U2
$108,601,283
Midway through what is destined to be the highest-grossing tour in history, U2 remains the biggest band in the world. Its 360° tour is the group’s first under a 12-year multirights deal with Live Nation that includes worldwide touring, merchandising and the band’s lucrative U2.com Web site, a digital distribution gold mine for all things U2. The act’s current global stadium tour is the most expensive ever mounted — the daily nut is said to be $750,000 — but those costs are well offset by the highest capacities ever from the band’s 360-degree configuration. By even the most conservative estimates, U2 was far and away the top revenue generator in music last year.

Madonna's boyfriend, Jesus Luz signed with Warner Bros.

Madonna’s boyfriend, model Jesus Luz, has signed a contract with the artist’s former record label, Warner Bros., according to a UK report.

The  23-year-old Brazilian has recently started to show the talent of DJ at a series of exclusive parties and now Luz begins his career as a pop star after signing an agreement to launch two singles with Warner Bros., the label that Madonna has left last year.

The first song of Luz, “We Came From Light” will be released in May 2010. Furthermore, Madonna ensure that her beloved toy will be successful in convincing the music industry convincing herr collaborator Victor Calderone to remix Jesus’ songs.

in this world

Madonna’s foregrounding of sexuality falls into the category of third-wave feminism, with its edgy, in-your-face tactics. This type of feminism glorifies rebellion, whether it is directed at the patriarchal status quo or at second wave feminism’s monolithic critique of gender, tendency toward “victim politics,” and suspicion of non-normative sexuality.

Within Judith Peraino’s proposed Garland-Ethridge-Madonna matrix of queer iconicity, Madge’s 2000 hit What it Feels Like for a Girl neatly articulates what de Courtivron refers to as “the wish to be a woman.” Anxiety accompanying such a wish drives much of Peraino’s analysis, yet she critiques the recording What it Feels Like for a Girl as an invocation of an opposite desire, noting how “the lyrics describe…an inner wish for masculine power disguised by an outer mask of womanliness that serves to avert retribution.” Yet the spoken intro to the song, daintily intoned in Madonna’s faux British accent (this, I think, was the start of her British phase), is a direct address presumably not to her female fans but her male (queer?) listeners:

For a boy to look like a girl is degrading

‘Cause you think being a girl is degrading

But secretly you’d love to know what it’s like, wouldn’t you?

Wish to be a woman, indeed! Peraino celebrates Madonna’s acknowledgement of a polysexual fanbase, but in the music video version of What it Feels Like for a Girl, directed by her husband Guy Ritchie, the subjects to whom she addresses the song are perhaps most easily identified as heterosexual, even machismo males (an interpretation complicated by her concert version of the song, featuring backup dancers Peraino describes as “salsa dancing soft-butch women.”).

For Peraino, the chief difference between the recorded and video versions of What it Feels Like for a Girl is gendered. The former she deems hyper feminized while the latter, with its dance beat and violent imagery, masculinized. Peraino’s description of the video is great, and thorough. She reads Madonna as “a leather-clad female Robin Hood with tattoos and bruises, guns and Camaros. An elderly woman, whom she ‘liberated’ from an old folks home, rides as a catatonic ’shot gun’ while Madonna commits gratuitous acts of violent mischief against men.”

I want to offer an alternative reading, one that critiques Madonna’s Judy Garland lineage as much as it perpetuates it. Let’s say the song is addressed to the old lady.

To be sure, What it Feels Like for a Girl is a violent video, so much so that MTV banned it from the airways. Madonna rams her car into men whose only crime is grinning at her, she tasers a man from behind and steals his cash, hijacks a man’s a car and then lights him on fire. And she buys the old lady a slurpy. When the shock of the first crash knocks the woman’s glasses down her nose, Madonna pushes them back up again.

What does she want the old lady to see?

If Peraino is correct that third wave feminists rebel against the second wave’s “tendency toward ‘victim politics,’” then it’s not simply Madonna’s use of sex that places her squarely in the third wave: the video What if Feels Like for a Girl aggressively rejects female victimhood, belying the unthreatening femininity which the lyrics prescribe.

But I don’t think the song is meant to chastise second wavers. Perhaps Peraino is right about Madonna’s desire to “liberate” the old lady, but I’m not sure she’s liberating her from the nursing room so much as from her beliefs about, yes, what it feels like for a girl in this world. The three words which, in the chorus, follow the titular phrase, are telling. This world, our world, is different from the world in which the old lady spent her girlhood, thanks in part to the hard work of second wave feminists, themselves probably at least a generation younger than the old woman in the video.

Judy Garland, perhaps a contemporary of the Madonna’s shot gun passenger, is beloved for what Peraino calls her “tragic queerness” but also for her resilience, especially in her “resistance to predictable repetitions of behavior.” Generations later, Madonna is likewise iconic in her ability to reinvent her public image, yet her reinvention is unburdened by a pretense of feminine feebleness. She’s aware of the precedent, as the lyrics to What it Feels Like for a Girl assure us, but the video makes it clear that she’s not beholden it. She comes out swinging from the start, and takes the old lady along for the ride.

Dawn of Contentment

Tonight, I spoke with a friend who has a struggle that I share and that you share. Together, we struggle for freedom, for we are chained by shadows. These shadows are the desires and ambitions of our hearts. They are not realities, but rather, unquenched cravings for fulfillment that is founded on false hopes. They are the idols of our making.

My idol is success. To describe the feeling, I will turn to two quotes: one from Madonna, one from Chariots of Fire.

Madonna: My drive in life is from this horrible fear of being mediocre. And that’s always pushing me, pushing me. Because even though I’ve become Somebody, I still have to prove that I’m Somebody. My struggle has never ended and it probably never will.

Chariots of Fire: “Contentment! I’m twenty-four and I’ve never known it. I’m forever in pursuit and I don’t even know what it is I’m chasing. …I’ll raise my eyes and look down that corridor, four feet wide, with ten lonely seconds to justify my whole existence… but will I?”

I pulled both of these quotes from Tim Keller’s book, Counterfeit Gods. In it, he makes a bold statement that my experience confesses to be true: “More than other idols, personal success and achievement lead to a sense that we ourselves are god, that our security and value rest in our own wisdom, strength, and performance. To be the very best at what you do, to be at the top of the heap, means no one is like you. You are supreme.”

I’ve seen this in myself, without a doubt. I do not only want to have value for these things, but I want to have the power to save. I see the world in shambles, and sometimes I feel as if I can not trust God. When I stop trusting God, my understanding of my role in His redemptive plan spirals into a one-man quest to take control. “The world’s problems are in my hands, It’s my job, My task, Mine, Mine Alone, My Precious.”

This carnal urge results in my endless thirst for achievement that will not be satisfied with anything less than establishing peace on earth and goodwill among men. If I do not find my contentment now, I will never have it. Even if I succeeded in achieving more for the sake of the gospel and human rights than anyone in 100 years, I would not be content. Instead, I would mourn like Oskar Schindler at what I failed to do, what I failed to give.

Contentment is the anti-venom, and it comes through freedom offered only by the forgiveness of and submission to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Then I see, God does love me, and He is well pleased with me, shortcomings and all. The love of God compels love for God, which leads to healing.

As my love for Jesus exceeds my love for my self, I begin looking for validation and fulfillment in His Success – His Lordship – rather than my own. I find joy in being the Nolan that God loves, rather than the false Nolan my idolatry longs for. I know that I am Somebody. When this happens, I am set free from the shadows I was chained to, and I awake in the dawn of contentment.

Empathy in lyrics #4

Madonna - I'll Remember

Madonna - I'll Remember

I’ll Remember – Madonna
Say goodbye to not knowing when
The truth in my whole life began
Say goodbye to not knowing how to cry
You taught me that

And I’ll remember the strength that you gave me
Now that I’m standing on my own
I’ll remember the way that you saved me
I’ll remember

Inside I was a child
That could not mend a broken wing
Outside I looked for a way
To teach my heart to sing

And I’ll remember the love that you gave me
Now that I’m standing on my own
I’ll remember the way that you changed me
I’ll remember

I learned to let go
Of the illusion that we can possess
I learned to let go
I travel in stillness
And I’ll remember happiness
I’ll remember

And I’ll remember the love that you gave me
Now that I’m standing on my own
I’ll remember the way that you changed me
I’ll remember

No I’ve never been afraid to cry
Now I finally have a reason why
I’ll remember

GLEE: Madonna Episode Sneak Peak

Fab news for Gleeks around the world jonesing for the new season of GLEE to start on April 13th: Entertainment Tonight teased us with a sneak peak at the all Madonna episode of GLEE.

via poptalkers.com

Rumors are criss-crossing the blogosphere about which songs from Madonna’s 25-year career will be featured on GLEE, the hit Fox show and winner of Best Comedy or Musical Series at the Golden Globes. The preview clip reveals the first official GLEE version one of Madonna’s hits: “Express Yourself” sung by Michele Lea, who plays the beleaguered Rachel. Dianna Agron, who plays former head Cherrio Quinn Fabray, is reportedly singing “Papa Don’t Preach” while Jane Lynch’s Sue Sylvester takes on “Vogue.”

“It’s got like 10 numbers in it, and the production value is very big,” revealed creator Ryan Murphy about the upcoming episode. “We adore her and worship her, so when I’m directing, I’m always like, ‘Do it for Madonna.’”

What will Madonna’s reaction be if our Gleeks fail to impress with their tribute? This is how Sue sees it: “Somewhere in the English countryside in a stately manor home, Madonna is weeping.”

One Month Challenge: Sober, Week 2

In this new series we will be following a different CollegeCandy writer for a month as she takes on a personal challenge. This month we’re following Lauren from University of Michigan. She’s going sober for the month of February and will be sharing her ups (like feeling great last weekend!) and downs with us each Saturday.

It’s official: I’ve been 100% sober for a full two weeks! (I’ve even opted out of using mouthwash!) While that may not be such a big deal to some people out there (ahem, mean commenters, ahem), I am really, really proud of myself. Especially after the week I’ve had.

My first week of this challenge was pretty easy, breeezy Cover Girl. The weekdays flew by and then I was back at my parents’ house, where the temptation to drink was pretty minimal. But since then, I’ve survived a steakhouse dinner without wine, a Super Bowl party without beer, and two very serious nights at the bar without shots, shots, shots, shots shots.

On Thursday night I hit a low key bar with a few friends. They sipped on some beers and I sipped on some Diet Cokes. We were all having a great time – talking, catching up, giving guys the eyes across the bar. I really didn’t miss drinking at all, especially when I only spent $3 the entire night (unlike beer and vodka, Diet Coke has free refills at the bar!). But it wasn’t totally smooth sailing; LMFAO came on the jukebox towards the end of the evening, which, as we all know, makes you want to drink. Or chug. I was starting to cave. I was having a hard time remembering why I was doing all this. Seriously, Had Ke$ha or Miley come on next, I probably would have had to run out of the bar screaming. Instead, I took a little sniff of my friends’ SoCo Lime shots, grimaced, and instantly felt better about my decision.

I woke up on Friday and felt great. Not only did I hang out with friends and have a great time, but I didn’t feel like total hell. And I was really proud and happy to know that I can indeed stay in the social scene, even if I’m sober. That knowledge made me feel good and took away my nerves for last night’s adventures.

Because while Thursday was a test, Friday night out with my crew is akin to a Bob and Jillian Last Chance Workout. Minus the sweat and the puking. OK, maybe just minus the sweat. These kids take their partying really seriously and know they can always count on me to do the same. They are the reason that I hadn’t made it home before 5am ONCE during the month of January. They are the reason I often do nothing of substance from Friday to Monday. They’ve perfected the art of peer pressure (by throwing a little Jewish guilt into the mix) and I didn’t know how they’d handle Sober February. Plus, how much fun could I have if they were wasted/dancing on tables/punching me (which the guys like to do when they’ve had a few…)?

But I wanted to hang out with them and I really wanted to see if I could handle it sober. So I went. We met up for dinner at 6:30… and I didn’t come home until 3 a.m. And I did it all without a lick of alcohol (even though my girl friend did offer to let me “suck her ice” out of her vodka soda… every time she had one). I drank water, I danced, I joked… I even took a shot. Of Diet Coke. Which my friend got for me so I didn’t feel left out when everyone else was throwing them back.

It was a seriously great time! I was shocked. I mean, I thought I would have fun hanging out with everyone, but I never thought I would have had as great a time as I did. I never even got annoyed by the drunk people around me; instead, I kinda enjoyed looking at the drunk world through sober colored lenses. And, seriously, Erotic Photo Hunt is SO MUCH easier when you’re not seeing double.

The best part of my night, though, was coming home, stripping off my skinny jeans (which are definitely feeling looser already!), and being able to close my eyes and go to sleep without the room spinning. Well, that and the late night pizza slice I picked up that I was able to actually taste, savor and enjoy. Mmmm mmm gooooood.

The McQueen is Dead

Shocking news to kick off Fashion Week.

Britain’s bad boy genius has died.

Revered by peers, and celebrated by critics and clients alike, he was more than a mantle Madonna could pass to Gaga.

The fashion world in particular, and the world at large, has lost one of it’s truly great artists.

RIP Alexander McQueen.

Dolce & Gabbana: SS2010-Donne

Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 2010

After the incredibly successful ad campaigns for Louis Vuitton, Madonna is back for one of the most buzzed about stories of the year in the fashion industry. Looking like we would never imagined her… in her role as housewife: with her laundry, relaxing after sweeping an indoor patio and sitting near the bed.

Like we saw in the fashion show back in september, the italian duo went back to their roots, not only bringing sexy back – the essence of the brand –  but doing something very personal by taking the sicilian tradition as their inspiration for this beautiful collection. Full of sheering, laces, corsets, crafty details and elements that felt very traditional and religious but with that modern twist that somehow was very edgy with sexy and tight silhouettes. We love Dolce & Gabbana, and this collection made that “why?” very clear… Just beautiful, sexy and luxurious, very luxurious. Steven Klein was responsible for the photography. See the entire fashion show and the fashion review: Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 2010.

The Freakin' Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame

Because I am such a music junkie, I have updates sent to me from Rollingstone.com to my phone. Usually, it’s the same bullshit: so-and-so broke up, such-and-such fell off a stage, blah blah blah. However, one update really caught my eye: “ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES”.

(Before I go off on a tangent, let me just say this: I refuse to acknowledge the RNRHOF as a legit judge of music until Nirvana gets in. Not too much longer, baby!)

So, anyways, I click on this update, and what it contains nearly made me crap my pants in shock: Madonna got in to the Hall of Fame.

My first though, of course, was HOW? She isn’t REALLY a musician. In a mainstream sense, yeah, she sings, dances, shakes her ass, the whole 9 yards. But when you really analyze it, she lip syncs at concerts, doesn’t write her own music, and has basically built a career out of being a controversial promiscuous woman. So what kind of committee would put her in the same ranking as somebody like Bob Dylan or Jimi Hendrix? They BOTH wrote AND performed their own music, and they definitely earned their spot in the hall of fame. Did Madonna do any of this? The answer, I believe, is a resounding “HELL NAH!”

Anyways, the other inductees include:
-Abba (are you SERIOUS?)

-Genesis (lolol Phil Collins)

-Leonard Cohen (friggin’ finally.)

-Jeff Beck (don’t care)

-Metallica (I hate them for suing Napster, but other than that, they deserved it.)

-Jimmy Cliff (really don’t care.)

High, flying, adored.

This is what I want to be. (P.S. wasn’t Madonna gorgeous as a redhead?)

more about “High, Flying, Adored -Evita (movie) 1996“, posted with vodpod

No, not literally an Instant Queen. Its terrible being an idealized figurehead. Well. For people like me maybe. :P (not diplomatic enough)

What I’m talking about is to make my mark (or the start of it perhaps) before 30.  What is my mark? Perhaps something not everyone desires but I definitely strive for. To one person, I may be an utter failure but to another, I can be a success. Let’s just leave it to personal aspirations, shall we?

Maybe this is laughable, but I don’t believe in this being an impossibility. That’s all I’m really going to reveal, because like Gaga, I understand the importance of having a popopopopoker face popopopoker face. (just wanted an excuse to burst out into song. I love musicals, can you tell? :P )

Chic Mix Playlist - My Teen Years Vol. 1

New segment! Chic Mix Playlists!

Here I will feature 7 songs that I like, revolve around a theme or genre, or are just cool. This is the first of hopefully many!

My Teen Years Vol. 1

There are some songs that defined my awkward adolescence. Some of these artists were the first cassettes/CDs that I owned!

  • Madonna – Ray of Light
    • I also had Madonna’s Immaculate Collection, but Ray Of Light was the first album I had by the pop queen. It really got me into India and Henna.
  • Spice Girls – 2 Become 1
    • My girlfriends and I performed this at our highschool talent show. What can I say?
  • Mariah Carey - Fantasy
    • I remember singing this one over and over and wishing I could roller blade.
  • La Bouche - Be My Lover
    • My dance tune. “Ah ha, yea, hey he, wanna be my lover!”
  • No Doubt - Just A Girl
    • I played the Tragic Kingdom album in my cassette player when I would go for walks. I always think of it when I excercise now.
  • Alanis Morissette - Ironic
    • A sample of my angst bitterness….I haven’t outgrown it yet.
  • Ace Of Base - Beautiful Life
    • Another great dance tune! Love the piano.

A-Rod and Madonna, Part 2? Nooo!!!!!

Us Weekly magazine is reporting that Madonna spent the weekend of Jan 16 at A-Rod’s house up in Westchester, NY.  The ex(?)-couple broke up over a year ago, but have supposedly “stayed in touch”.   A-Rod dated actress Kate Hudson during that time, as anyone who watched even a single Yankee game last season can tell you.  Supposedly Kate and the Yankee wives got along well.  Probably not so much for Madonna.

Here’s an interesting tidbit:  In 2009, while dating Kate Hudson, A-Rod hit in the clutch the entire regular season, and then, if you can imagine, he got even hotter in the post season and led the Yankees to their first World Series title since 2000 when they beat that other pathetic excuse for a baseball team that calls New York home.  In 2008, while dating Madonna, his numbers were just as good statistcally, but those homers and RBIs invariably came when they couldn’t make less of a difference in the outcome of any one game, and with ducks on the pond, they were more likely to drown than score.  Not to mention the photos of him kissing himself in the mirror and all that other crap.

So, not only do I hope he gets back with Kate so that we can win another Series, but I’m wondering if maybe Madonna isn’t a secret card-carrying member of Redsox Nation sent back here to mess with our guy’s head.  Maybe we should do something like that to them.  Let’s see, who can we get to turn the heads of Kevin Useless and Big Poopy?  Maybe Chuck Knoblauch will come out of retirement and take one for the team…  Go ask him and let me know what he says.

Madonna

In this section, I’m going to speak about Madonna’s style and her capacity to be totally chameleonic through the years. I’ll compare her previous works and fame to the current ones and say how she has managed to be famous and to maintain her fame.

Why have I chosen Madonna? She has always been a controversial and an important character in pop music’s world. She started her career with an air of pioneer, she knew from the very beginning how to make people notice her, she was sure of manipulating what critic Laura Mulvey called the Male Gaze. According to Mulvey’s definition we’re talking about the Male Gaze when the image of a woman is destined to be seen from the perspective of the –heterosexual- male as object and sexual object or ornament rather than as subjects.

On the one hand, I think that Madonna has manage to subvert the male gaze through the years. Just taking a look at one or two of her works, we’re able to see how she manages to catch the complete attention of the viewer.  She normally wears suggestive or provocative clothes and she clearly uses her “femininity”, or rather sexuality, to attract the attention of the male gaze.

She does this continuously, willingly and blatantly. However, at the same time she takes advantage of her position. She is not only the object of the male gaze but also the subject because it is her who directs the gaze and she is the one that tells the male where and how to look at her. Moreover, she gets a high benefit from all of this, she gets the sales. Moreover, in her videos, lyrics or even in her images she is not the passive object of desire but she is active and she is clearly the one in command, all the males usually look up to her. She knows that everyone looks at her as an object of desire and sexual pleasure, but in spite of that, she’s the subject and who decides her sexuality.

On the other hand, maybe what she does is a bit dangerous because, in the end, she continuous to appear as sexual object of desire, and she’s just being seen from the male gaze, without having a decision on it. So, it doesn’t matter if she imposes the conditions, she’s still an object, not a subject.

The male gaze hasn’t changed, but the way that people values it, yes.

Nowadays we can see how the media uses the desire of men for women’s sexuality, particularly the TV and the advertisement industry, constantly attract the male gaze by showing women as sexual objects. Women and young girls want to be like the model of woman that the TV shows show, and the male population likes this way to see the woman, they ‘fall in love’ with that prototype because it’s more sensual, suggestive, and hence, beautiful and attractive.

What the media have done, in fact, is not to give power to women but to turn their over sexualized bodies into something very common and ordinary, and we’re using to it because we see everyday in the media how women are being sexualized. In my opinion, Madonna has tried to change this. She may not change the way male look at women but she changes the way women look at men. She manipulates not only the male’s desires but uses also the tools of pop culture. She has reinvented herself through the years to follow the trends of pop culture and to keep selling albums, always satisfying the customer but never losing command.

We could say that she was a pioneer from the very beginning. She looked rebel and suggestive since her first single’s music video “Everybody”, where she dances and in one part, she almost whispers the lyrics and looks sensually to the camera.

Furthermore, she was a pioneer in the musical sense too. She introduced electronic elements in the background of the songs to create a sensation of innovation.

She also looks like an independent and liberated woman because even when she ‘is’ a sexual object, she does whatever she wants. I think that Madonna gives the image of a powerful, famous and decided woman who has conquered the pop’s trends and the music’s world with her strategies.

Sometimes we can see her as a transgressor; she has never taken care of the rules. She invented and adapted herself from the very beginning, she’s chameleon, as we can see in the pictures below.

I can say that she’s chameleon because she has been adapting all the time to what the customer asked of her and wanted, following the trends and changing everything related with her works because of them. She has changed her appearance, her style, and her works’ sound.

This has a positive and a negative side though.

On the positive, I think that we, the women, are more liberated. I mean, nowadays a woman can express her sexual desire without being criticized as a harlot. We’re a little bit freer and so our thoughts are too. Take Shakira as an example of that, because with the song “She Wolf” she’s talking about the woman’s desire liberation and about the liberation of the woman itself as a subject with the rights to feel sexual desire.

On the negative side, obviously they earn more money by the exploitation of their sexuality, but all these changes in the way that the media present the female artists’ works have caused society not to think about it as a bad thing for the women. Male chauvinism still exists, and the women are the victims of it.

I’m going to put here some pictures of her through her career to see the progress that she’s done and how she has adapted herself to the times.

All the images that I’m going to put here have been chosen from random years until nowadays, to make us able to see her changes and how she uses her sexuality to attract the male’s gaze.

First period (1980-1989):

(Madonna in 1983, Photo Series by Deborah Feingold.)

(Madonna Photographed by Francesco Scavullo for Harper’s Bazaar magazine)

I’ve chosen these four images because they project the two principal characteristics of the 80’s Madonna. One year after the first picture above, 1984, Madonna released “Like a Virgin” and reached fame by selling a quantity of 26 millions of albums worldwide. It was one of the best periods of her career.  She was 26 at the time.

On one hand, we can see clearly her rebel’s aspect. First, because of her disregarded look and her crosses’ earrings, a Christianity’s symbol. In the first image she looks both innocent and sensual. She is eating a lollipop and wearing the cross on her ears. This is clearly a provocation, because the Christian symbol contrasts with the lollipop as phallic symbol. Her eyes suggest she knows what she is doing but her youth suggests innocence. In the third photo, Madonna looks like a model for a fashion magazine but the low V neck suggests her breasts and the way she pushes her dress up suggest something a bit more sexual than a common advertisement for a fashion magazine. In the last picture, Madonna puts together a clever combination of styles and women’s clichés. First, her dress resembles the dress of Playboy bunny girls but its color, her make up –very small and red lips- and her hair style suggest a much older look, almost imitating the cinema divas of the 20’s. Finally, her leggings and her boots are clearly eighties. The combination looks quite new and challenging.

In 1988’s photos, we can see a feminine Madonna, who doesn’t have a muscular body and who wears a dress that sticks out her body curves. Despite the more feminine appearance, there are always elements which indicate a more masculine or maverick touch, as the black boots indicate. Madonna created a revolution in pop music; it was one of the first times that a woman used her sexuality so obviously in pop music and called the male’s attraction without any kind of disguise.

Second Period (1990-1999):

(Madonna during her Blond Ambition Tour in 1990)

(Left: Photographed by Steven Meisel for Rolling Stone-magazine, in 1991. Right: At the Golden Globe Awards in 1997)

The essential point in this part of her career is the change from adolescence to maturity.  In her previous stage, one could thing that Madonna was just playing and not knowing exactly what she did. In this stage, Madonna knows very well what she is doing.

In her Blond Ambition Tour’s photos we can see Madonna wearing Paul Gaultier famous top, specially made for her. The corset, particularly the cup shape part, clearly show women’s lines. Traditionally, the corset was a sign of femininity but also of oppression because women could barely breathe when they wore corsets. However, here we see a Madonna wearing a very tight corset but clearly being a very liberated woman. Oppression is absent.

On the second picture, she has a Marilyn look and, again, she goes back in time to recall an age of sensuality. Her dress and her tights also remind of an older age, the can-can women of Western saloons. Yet, a bit to the left we can see the naked torso of a man, something quite unusual when the woman is the object of the gaze. It is clear that Madonna is giving a message, “Hey girls, let’s be objects of desire if we choose to but look at that man, he is your object of desire.”

Madonna’s make up is also another sigh. Her lips are very marked and a strong red, symbol of female sensuality.

We have to notice the shoes too. She started using shoes with heels, something that always makes a woman look bossier, powerful, more confident but sexier too. It is known that high heels are a fetishistic* and sexual symbol.

I have to emphasize how she’s always challenging and/or suggesting with her sight or her body’s position. In the photo taken by Steven Meisel, Madonna is again looking back in time. Her hair style and her cabaret position suggest the happy 20’s. On the other hand, we can tell that she’s naked behind the chair, and that joint with her expression, converts her in a sexual object, besides, she wants to be the sexual object that the viewer will see. In a way, this picture also remind us of those secret pornographic cards in the time of our great-great parents for this kind of nudity was absolutely censored.  She’s a big promoter of herself and posing like this upgrades her sales.

Finally, on the last picture we can still see another change in her look. Here she looks as thousand other actresses or singers at the moment of receiving a prize. She does not look too sexy or too challenging, except for her breast clearly showing above her dress.

In 1998, she released “Ray of Light”, which sold 25 millions of copies worldwide.

Third period (2000-2009):

(Left: Madonna in the Grammy Awards in 2001. Right: American Life promotional photos by Craig McDean in 2003)

(During her Hard Candy promotion tour in French in 2008)

By the 2000s, Madonna has become more masculine, as we can see at the 2001’s photos. She stopped wearing dresses at her performances just to adapt herself to the trend. She adopted a more athlete appearance because of the change in the woman’s canon but also because she wants to give the message that, despite her older age, she is in absolute command and her sales can still go up.

Nowadays, the kind of women that most appear in the advertisement, TV or movies, the most searched image is the image of a thin young girl, usually with soft features but with big breast, thin waist, not too much hips and very long and shapy legs. Madonna does not keep faithful to this image. First, she is not a teenager any more so she has adapted the look. Second, she is thin but very muscular, which she manages by doing a lot of physical exercise. Together with her dancer’s condition, this makes her look more muscled and, hence, masculine. She prefers the muscle rather than the sensuality of the feminine curve. She has not made her breasts or her lips bigger.

Yet, as most of famous actresses and singers nowadays, she has resorted to Botox –as well as the make-up- to look younger and nicer than before. This could be a problem in the future because what Botox does is to doss the muscles of the face to avoid the wrinkles to appear. With time, if she continues using it, her face will lose the expression.

She also has resumed her rebel’s touch; she uses gloves constantly and masculine shoes with heels, converting her in a woman who has the power because the male’s character has always had the power.

Despite that new appearance, she’s still using the male gaze as a selling weapon. She attracts the attention of everyone, men and women, doing controversial sexual things, as we can see in the photo of her Hard Candy promotion tour, where she kissed a background’s dancer. That wasn’t the first time; she also kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera in the Video Music Awards in 2003, in a performance that was clearly all about sex and domination, and where Madonna had the dominance all the time.

Summarizing, we can say that at the beginning, Madonna used an appearance adjusted to the trends which searched for a woman that had to be feminine and sexual. Over the years, she has adapted her body to the trends, becoming feminine in a different way –the way that nowadays is-, but she has also become more controversial and sexual in her performances to keep the eyes of everyone on her, keep selling albums and keep being as famous as before.

As the music changes, she adapts her music and style to what the customer wants. This century, music’s sound is more electronic and less natural, with computers, the recording companies changes almost all the voice of the singer and it gets a totally different pitch or sound.

The topics of the lyrics change too. We’re always hearing more sexual or suggestive songs. Madonna uses this. Normally, almost all of her lyrics had a meaning, now she just sings to sell, not to express an idea or an ideal, so her lyrics aren’t interesting. People buy the rhythm.

Let’s see this with an example:

Lucky Star lyrics:

You must be my Lucky Star
‘Cause you make the darkness seem so far
And when I’m lost you’ll be my guide
I just turn around and you’re by my side

[chorus]

Come on shine your heavenly body tonight
‘Cause I know you’re gonna make everything all right

You may be my lucky star
But I’m the luckiest by far

In this song she’s talking about someone important for her. She’s singing about love and how lucky she is for having such an important person in her life. This song is from her first debut album “Madonna” in 1983.

Like a Prayer lyrics:

Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like home

When you call my name it’s like a little prayer
I’m down on my knees, I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour I can feel your power
Just like a prayer you know I’ll take you there

I hear your voice, it’s like an angel sighing
I have no choice, I hear your voice
Feels like flying
I close my eyes, Oh God I think I’m falling
Out of the sky, I close my eyes
Heaven help me

I see two readings here. First, I think that she’s talking about someone that’s very important for her, that’s why she says that when he says her name it feels like home, something very charming. I could say that she’s talking about God too, first because at the beginning of the song Madonna names it, and because she also says that she can feel its power.

This song was released in 1989, in her “Like a Prayer”’s album.

Erotica lyrics:

Give it up, do as I say
Give it up and let me have my way
I’ll give you love, I’ll hit you like a truck
I’ll give you love, I’ll teach you how to…

I’d like to put you in a trance, all over
Erotic, erotic, put your hands all over my body [repeat twice]
Erotic, erotic

Erotica, romance
I’d like to put you in a trance
Erotica, romance
Put your hands all over my body

Here, she’s clearly the boss character, where she does whatever she wants and however she wants it. She’s talking about domination and obviously about sex. If we see the video we will see a sexual Madonna in a lot of different sceneries and with different –male or even female- persons.  This song was released in her album “Erotica” in 1992.

Now let’s see a current song:

Celebration lyrics:

[…]Put your arms around me When it gets too hot we can go outside But for now just come here, let me whisper in your ear An invitation to the dance tonight

Come join the party, it’s a celebration

Anybody just won’t do

Let’s get this started, no more hesitation

‘Cause everybody wants to party with you

Haven’t I seen you somewhere before?

You look familiar

You wanna’ dance? Yeah.

I guess I just don’t recognize you with your clothes on

What are you waiting for?

This song is talking about a party; it doesn’t have a real meaning. Here we see the sexual context, when she says to the boy that she doesn’t recognize him if he’s not naked. This song is from her “Celebration” album, in 2009.

Her “Confessions on a Dancefloor”’s album sold a total of 15 millions of copies in 2005. Even when she’s more famous than before, the quantity of sold have decrease and I think it’s because the music’s quality is in decadence.

We could say that her fame is based on her sexual image, her provocative songs, her ease to adapt herself to the trends, and her capacity to sell herself.

Madonna’s one of the biggest influences in the pop music’s world. She has contributed a lot of things about appearance, style, and ultimately in business’ world benefits.

One of the things that she has contributed to the feminism world is the fact that, maybe, she gives the image of a woman that can express her sexual desire, and hence, the women that see her videos or hear her songs can too. She also has given the idea of a woman being strong, but with a strength that’s different from men’s. Men have always been the symbol of strength because they are muscular, brave, and who has always done the hardest work. Now, Madonna is suggesting that we can get whatever we want if we use our body’s sensuality. Obviously, that’s not correct, but it’s a kind of power that we could use and, furthermore, as we have seen through her career, it’s very effective.

'Hope for Haiti' Telethon Raises $58 Million

Friday night’s star-studded “Hope for Haiti” telethon has raised a record-breaking $58 million, with more donations continuing to pour in from around the world, the benefit’s organizers announced Saturday.

The preliminary figure is a record for donations made by the public through a disaster relief telethon, according to a news release from telethon organizers.

Additionally, the “Hope for Haiti Now” album, a compilation of the night’s musical performances made available on Apple’s iTunes, was the No. 1 album in 18 countries Saturday. Sales figures for iTunes are still being calculated, and the preliminary figure of $58 million does not include donations from corporations or large private donors.

People will be able to make donations to “Hope for Haiti” via phone, Web, text messaging and regular mail for the next six months, according to the news release.

A moving performance by Alicia Keys opened Friday night’s telethon, and actor George Clooney, serving as the Los Angeles host for the event, made the first appeal for donations to raise money for relief efforts after last week’s devastating earthquake.

“The Haitian people need our help,” Clooney said. “They need to know they are not alone. They need to know that we still care.”

The show was one of the most widely distributed prime-time televised benefits in history, appearing simultaneously on more than 25 networks — including CNN, where Anderson Cooper reported live from Haiti during the event.

More than 100 actors, musicians and other celebrities answered phones in New York and Los Angeles after professional operators first talked to donors.

“Thank you so much for your donation,” actress Reese Witherspoon told one caller. “You can’t imagine how much love and great, wonderful energy is here today. People are doing everything they can to make a difference in these people’s lives.”

Several other calls were aired live, including with Julia Roberts, Steven Spielberg, Taylor Swift and Stevie Wonder.

Swift and Wonder were among the evening’s musical performers. Others included Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Shakira, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Coldplay, Christina Aguilera, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban, Jennifer Hudson, Madonna, Dave Matthews and Neil Young.

Other celebrities appearing on the telethon included Jon Stewart, Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Morgan Freeman, Ben Stiller, Clint Eastwood and Denzel Washington.

Proceeds from the telethon will benefit Oxfam America, Partners in Health, the Red Cross, UNICEF, the U.N. World Food Programme, Yele Haiti Foundation and the Clinton Bush Haiti Foundation.

Madonna x Dolce & Gabbana = Hot Combo

The Material Girl is the face for Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring/Summer 2010 line.

Question we have is does Madonna ever go out of style? Only person we can  think of that is on her heels is Mary J. Blige.
